On my deer hunting bucket list.... Just need to find me a hand cannon....and a really dumb deer to come close enough! A friend of mine has a nice 357,extended with scope and he shoots a quarter at 100 yards. More than enough range. The 357 I had/have is only a 4" and no scope. I would be limited to normal archery ranges. I simply wasn't confident enough with it to use and be certain I and it would do the job cleanly. CLEANLY being the key word. I hate loosing a deer and I would feel doubly terrible if it happened and in my own mind I felt like I wasn't putting forth my best effort in the process. I figure I got a few friends that will let me borrow what I need if I want to push the issue....Last thing I need is a hand cannon for 16 days a year. I see taking a deer with a handgun I think may be similar to skydiving or the like....you do it once to say you have done it and that's enough! If I want to go skydiving doesn't mean I need to buy my own parachute...maybe a jump suit....but for a different reason....somethings don't wash out well!

Will be using the 308 hand cannon, a 357, or one of two 44's.

I have some good news. I brought it up that we (I) don't have a hand gun and she seemed okay that I get one. Thinking a 357 or 44. Need to stop by point blank west near me and see what I can find.

I have some super news. The past winter when I had my buck officially scored at Bass Pro Shop I bought a gun raffle ticket. 1st time in 58 years that I won something. Hand Gun value of $564. I'll get a Bass Pro Shop certificate. What a surprise and blessing.

Nice gun but in my experience the 357 mag is light for deer. Me personally would go with the 44 mag. Jimo.

I'm looking at both. How is the recoil between the two. 357 & 44

Just for the record, a 22 short will kill a deer. A 357 is a great deer caliber if shot placement is your first concern.
I have a 50 call CVA Optima 2 that I am still trying to get a deer with. I now also have a 357 "put down" gun that needs to earn its keep. Along with the old 410 and the new 308, I have a few options of unproven guns that need to get on the board.

I'm looking at both. How is the recoil between the two. 357 & 44 357 with hot loads is nothing to shoot as far as recoil is concerned. 44 has a decent kick to it but if you get one with some porting it's all push and no lift. I really enjoy shooting my Taurus 44mag.

But I did a test on a deer I shot . Before I field dressed it I shot it with my 357 mag 6" barrel S&W from 5 yards away. Standing on tailgate of truck shooting down. Hollow point mushroomed out fine but didn't make it to the other side of the rib cage. Second shot with full metal jacket barely made it a 1" into the ground on the other side. Both were hot loads and I was not impressed so it's my range gun now. 44mag will be more forgiving if your shot is off a little. Jmo

Im picking up a glock 20 in 10mm in the morning. I have 2 other 10mm handguns, a RIA 1911 and a Glock 29. I tell myself every year that im going to shoot a deer with one and I never do. This year will probably continue to be the same.

I have never liked the looks of a scope on a handgun. It just doesn't look right to me. I'm sure it's more accurate though.

I suck with handguns. I may send my glock 20 slide of to be milled for an RMR.

I have just further complicated things by picking up another Blackhawk, but in 44 Special this time. Decisions, decisions...

Twenty years ago I was out deer hunting with my brother and a friend. Walking the edge of a cornfield trying to flush a deer, I was carrying a Mossberg 12ga, and a Taurus .357mag revolver with a 4" barrel. At about 60 yards in front of me a coyote crossed the field in a slow loping trot. I stopped in my tracks and leveled the Mossberg. The coyote stopped at the edge of the woods and just looked at me, giving me a perfect broadside target. I squeezed the trigger on the Mossberg and it went BOOM! The coyote stood there, still looking at me, wondering what the noise was. I have no idea how I missed that coyote with a 12ga slug, but rather than racking the slide I decided to kneel. I very slowly dropped to one knee and laid the Mossberg down on the ground. I pulled the Taurus .357mag from my holster and got a sight picture I liked, so I squeezed the trigger. The next thing I knew that coyote was running in circles and yelping like someone's pet. My first thought after hearing the yelping was, "Oh lord, PLEASE don't let me find a collar on that dog. Nope, it was indeed a coyote, and I hit him square in the front shoulder passing through both lungs. I still have no idea what happened with the Mossberg. Either I jerked the trigger without realizing it, or I had a terrible flyer. At any rate, I had just missed with a long gun, and hit with a 4" barreled revolver, from 60 yards out.

Either I jerked the trigger without realizing it, or I had a terrible flyer. At any rate, I had just missed with a long gun, and hit with a 4" barreled revolver, from 60 yards out. In your story....I would have probably done the same. But it's a little different than intentionally using a weapon to take a deer. Your yote....that was a target of opportunity and you had already missed once. So is it really a big deal if you miss again or shot it in the behind on accident? In my opinion...no. Not that you intentionally do it....but your not going to loose sleep over it. It more than likely was only going to fill a hole anyhow. The gun I have I simply lacked the consistency I felt I needed to cleanly kill a deer and as such I was NOT going to put myself in that position. I'm not saying 4" isn't possible....it just wasn't with me and my gun. On game I am intentionally hunting my intent is a clean kill and it's our responsibility to ensure we limit ourselves to that objective. That is odd that your yote watched yo like that. Those I have seen don't ask many questions. I have spooked one as I was lined up the the shot and the yote buggered simply at the sound of my safety being switched off. I must have very high strung yotes!
