I thought I'd run this past y'all and see what you think.
I bought my cub Cadet mower from a large, family-owned local business. They sell mowers, ATVs, motorcycles, everything with wheels that isn't a car. They also have a service dept.
Well, last year my son hit the county sewer's manhole cover and bent a blade so bad it had to be replaced.
So, I sent it in and got a call from the service manager.
"Do you want mulching blades put back on the mower? It's really not ideal for your mower."
I replied that I didn't think so, but "why did it have mulching blades anyway?" ( new blades had been installed the year prior, BY THEM. I never asked for any such thing )
He didn't have an answer for that. Then it gets really weird. "Your battery cables were on backwards."
I asked how that could be, since they were the only people that had ever touched the mower in terms of maintenance. Of course, no answer for that either. Well, stuff happens, and they had been ok in the past (if expensive ) so I just went ahead and started mowing.
Ok, this year, had the mower in and the service manager calls. "Lucky your mower didn't burn up."
"Oh?" I replied.
"Yep. Your battery cables were backwards."
After a moment of stunned silence, I repeated last year's conversation, with the added detail that it was indeed, deja vu.
"At the very least here, you guys didn't rectify the issue last year, after you found it, and after you caused it in the first place. Also, I have to check my records, but I'm fairly certain you said you had to replace the battery last year, so did I not even get a new battery, or did I, and you guys hooked it up wrong AGAIN?"
No answer of course, and on top of that they failed to deliver the mower today. They did send a helpful text telling me it was ready for me to PICK UP.
I'm done with them at this point, but I hate to see a good local business damaged, so I'm going to write a letter to the owner about this weirdness. I'm a little suspicious that there might be more going on here. Nothing makes sense; how can a mower even start with cables on the wrong way? Even if it can, how can this happen, two years running? How do you put the wrong blades on a mower? Why the disconnect between the front desk and the service dept?
I suppose I should have checked the battery to make sure the pros put the cables on right, even though I've never heard of such a thing. I suppose I should inspect new blades to make sure the pros put on the right ones. I guess I should have to call the front desk to re-confirm delivery.
I know this is largely my fault for going back to them. All I can say is that the grass was high and I didn't feel like shopping around. My bad.
Do you think I should waste my time writing the owner? At any rate, I had to share the absurdity of it all.
