Before last season year I bought a tighter turkey choke. I shot a hen in Michigan with it last fall. In previous years I had used a standard full choke (flush, 0.700), then a Carlson's turkey choke (flush, 0.690), and while I killed birds I wasn't really thrilled with what I was seeing for pellets in the head and neck.
Can't remember the brand, but I now have an extended turkey choke in the gun (0.665). I typically used Winchester #6 loads, and also tried Federal flight control #6, but the patterns at 30 yds were not really impressive. The extended choke, which is the tightest I have, may have been the worst with the Winchester shells. Like maybe 25 yards max for shots at turkeys.
Was at Dunhams and saw some Remington Nitro #6 for a good price, so I bought a box. Set a target at 30 yds, chambered a Nitro and it shot an awesome pattern. I will shoot out to 40 yds without hesitation with this combination. So, for my Gun and choke, simply switching shells made a huge difference.
If any of you are still patterning your guns, don't be afraid to try a different brand of shell.

Great advice. Trying to spread out the cost, I would buy a different box a shells every year. Either a different shot size or brand. I did this for a few years until I found one that worked. My buddies gun likes the Nitros also.

Any shell with the flight control wad are designed for a more open choke. The wad acts like a choke and you want it to stay with the pellets as long as possible. A tighter choke or one with wad stripper in it actually defeats the purpose and will blow your pattern up. Exceptions to the rule but that is the way they were designed.

Yes, I wasn't suprised the flight controls weren't great out of the Carlson's choke or the extended choke (HS Strut Undertaker), but they weren't too good out of the standard full either. I never tried a modified, but maybe that's where they work best.
And I was really surprised to see the Winchesters do so much differently than the Nitros out of the Undertaker. Night and day difference.
