When I was in high school, those were about the fastest cars around, unless somebody had something older that had been built up. I had a few 3rd-gens, still have a couple sitting out in the barn. I always liked the styling of the 3rd-gens better, but was envious of the LS1 in those 4th-gen cars.
One of the ones out in the barn is a Trans Am GTA. I had the motor bored/stroked to 383, L98 heads re-worked, oversized throttle body, high-flow TPI plenum/runners/manifold, 160* thermostat and aluminum radiator, PCM tune, headers, 3k stall converter, and semi-manual valve body tranny with ratchet shifter. After all that I could take the LS1 Camaros and 4.6 Mustangs off the line, but still lost out on the top-end.

Would make a good grocery-getter for the wife if it weren't a manual.

Too much nitrous and not enough rpm. 12.5:1 .060" over 350, double hump heads 2.02/1.6 and ported as much as possible. It's been sitting like that since 1996. Moly 12 pt cage, 4-link Ford 9" locker for the street (3.00:1), spool for the track (4.56:1). Doug Nash 5 speed. Custom Cars & Concepts T-tops, power windows, power locks. No A/C, no radio back half chassis, made aluminum bumper supports to help lighten the car. Had to run 112 octane gas. Ran mid 9.40's at 140+ mph in the quarter, embarrassed a lot of cars (and bikes) on the street back then. One of these days it'll go back together when I have the time and $$. The dream motor is a aluminum turbo 632, auto trans no more manual.

I test drove one as a kid... I was in college and was home for the weekend... For some reason the folks went and test drove one of the Z28's (I think Dad was having a mid-life thing). They brought it home and asked me to drive it and tell them what I thought. Well, I wasn't going to turn that down, even if they did go with me! Well, after setting it side-ways with white smoke just pouring off the rear tires I straightened it up and we cruised down the state highway at about 95 and the damn thing was just begging to go even faster. I had no intentions of just doing the posted 55! My Dad just smiled the whole time and my mother seemed like she feared for her life. I also took it thru some 45 mph curves at about 70 to see how it would do and the damn thing stuck in those curves like nothing I had driven before...yep, that drive sealed the deal. They bought the V6 version!!!! What a waste!
Do I dare ask what your asking price is? My son has a hobby of driving death machines...he or one of his buddies may have an interest. I have a car in the garage that I don't have time or money for...been there for 20 years....may be there for another 20.

1/4 mile times? and I don't want to ask what happened to the drivers seat...... This is my uncles car. I don’t think he has taken down strip. He really just “finished” the car a few weeks ago. It really is a very powerful car, I have driven it a few times.

Would make a good grocery-getter for the wife if it weren't a manual. For the right price we can put an automatic in it
