Text for the Day -- I Samuel 9:15-17 ---------- Now the day before Saul came, the LORD had revealed to Samuel: "Tomorrow about this time I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be ruler over my people Israel. He shall save my people from the hand of the Philistines; for I have seen the suffering of my people, because their outcry has come to me." When Samuel saw Saul, the LORD told him, "Here is the man of whom I spoke to you. He it is who shall rule over my people."
Devotional ---------- Samuel was the last of the judges. The judges were people called by God to both protect and adjudicate problems among the people. During this period of Israel's history Israel existed as twelve separate tribes in their governance. There was no central leadership. The people were clamoring for a king like the other nations had. Samuel is directed by God to anoint Saul as the king, which he did later. Notice that Saul is God's choice.
Prayer ---------- Gracious God, you call us all into service. Help me discern your continuing call for me. Amen
