On Monday, I had to make a run to Lowe's for some fittings. Coming out of the store in the wind driven rain, I passed these fellas carting out sheets of paneling. They were actually trying to stuff it in the trunk. Not sure what they were drinking or smoking, but it must have been some good stuff I heard one of them say, "Bro, I can fit anything in my big ole Buick!" Once I was in my car, I had to roll back through the parking lot. Just had to see how this was going to play out. Here's the last I saw! If I'd been driving my Suburban instead of the Fusion, I would have offered to help. Shaking my head, I drove away!

"Hey y'all, watch this!
I've been on the wrong side of inadequately secured cargo more than once. Anymore, if I'm hauling or towing it, I'm securing it. Period.

I once had to do some defensive driving dodging pallets coming off of a truck that had them stacked REALLY high.

I was going up one of these steep hills behind a truck loaded with furniture in front of me. Fortunately I do not tailgate, because a chest of drawers slid off the back and EXPLODED like an action prop just ahead of me. There was plenty of it the air when I when through the debris like a scene from star wars. It blew into kindling but I didn't hit a piece! Didn't even feel a bump as I ran over any of it.

If I had nothing better to do I would of almost followed them to watch the comedy unfolding in front of me. But what can I say, I've been tempted to do that before, however I've seen my fair share of people holding mattresses on the top of their cars and struggling to do it down so they don't become airborne. That taught me all I ever needed to know. Always secure the load and then throw one more in for good measure.

That taught me all I ever needed to know. Always secure the load and then throw one more in for good measure. Dad was famous for using rope to tie stuff down. Not me, Ratchet straps and the more the better! I DID lose mounted tires and rims (slicks) off the trailer as I was going to an SCCA race with the car. (Drive the car to the race, jack it up, swap tires and go.) Watched them bounce along the highway and cars dodging. Thankfully nobody was hit, and traffic was light. I made the mistake of running the strap thru the center of the rims, and the bouncing on the trailer cut the strap.

I love seeing folks in small cars trying to figure out how they are going to get stuff in the vehicle. I once watched a guy put 12 foot long 2x4's inside his car by putting one end in the back seat and the rest stuck out the passenger window and rested on the mirror. I wanted to follow the guy to see how many mailboxes he hit or how he was going to contend with street signs... Watched another guy tying full sheets of plywood to the hood of his car with some sort of twine...but only along the sides and tied them to the roof by passing the twine thru the windows... Then he couldn't figure out how to get into his vehicle.... He finally crawled in thru the window!
I will also admit that a truck isn't always the answer either. I once but a 5 foot wide blade for the back of my tractor at rural king. I was in a hurry and I left the tailgate down. My truck at the time had one of those hard plastic, ribbed bed liners in it. That thing came shooting out the back of my truck right onto the highway! Good thing it only weighed a couple hundred pounds as after I stopped traffic I was able to get in back in the truck one end at a time and THEN shut the tailgate!
