So I finally broke my string of bad luck and took a decent eight point opening day. It's the first deer I've gotten in the 4 years since I started hunting again. The last time I got one was about 18 or 19 years ago. Not too much to the story really, but here goes anyway.
I got started a little later than I wanted and started walking out at day break. The spot I was going to was pretty far in the back of the property so it took a good while. This year, I started hunting out of what's called a tree saddle. I've practiced a bit, but am still pretty green so it took a while to get setup and get up in the tree. Within about 30 minutes of being up in the air, two does walked in. They were pretty wary, but didn't blow out. One came within 30 yards or so, but I don't typically get a doe tag. A little later in the morning, a small spike came in behind me and to my left. Same deal, he knew something wasn't right, but hung around a while. I saw a group of three does later in the morning.
Midday I decided to switch the side of the tree I was on since most of the deer were coming in behind me. That afternoon, I saw a deer through the brush walking in the creek bed to my left and could see antlers. I didn't think he was going to come out since he was following the creek bed. To my surprise he turned and walked across an open trail and I was able to harvest him. Despite being a bit of a pain to get used to, the tree saddle really came in handy as I was able to maneuver myself around and shoot a different direction when he changed his path.
The drag was rough. It was quite a distance and it was muddy. My wife brought me our game cart, but by the time she got there I had already dragged him most of the way. I will have get a better estimate of the distance, but I think it was somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 of a mile with 3 streams to cross. I think I'll be looking into getting an ATV next spring.
Like I said, he's nothing fantastic and not one of the bruisers I saw on my trail cams, but I'm still pretty happy about it.
I would like to have a Euro Mount done and wondered if anyone could recommend someone. I'm in Orange County now, but am traveling back to the Indianapolis area today or tomorrow so anything in between along 37 or 65 could work.
Thank you.
