I am in the market for a gently used or maybe new ATV/UTV. Any recommendations on brands and size? Any advice?
My budget is in the $5k area. Will be used mainly for deer hunting transportation and running around the farm.

I have a Yamaha Grizzly 700 FI that I bought new in 2009. It has 800 miles on it. My maintenance costs have been a battery and a service. Total cost around $450. I have a sprayer that fits on the back for when I spray glyphosate or Arrest Max, a seed braodcaster and a snow plow. I have used it to retrieve deer with a sled I have. It has never failed me except when the battery died. I recommend it unconditionally.

I've had a Bombardier (i.e. Can-Am) since 2007 with only 1 minor issues. It's liquid cooled and the temp sensor to turn on the cooling fan went out, and recently the winch isn't working like it should, so since the winch is a Warn, I should say only had 1 issue.

Big Arctic cat fan. Besides the can am, seems to me the rest sit awful low to the ground. Don't seem to have a whole lot of ground clearance.

For $5k, you can get a damn nice machine. The popularity of the side-by-sides has driven the used quad market way down. My neighbor just bought a 15 year old Polaris Sportsman for around $3k and it looks like it's never been out of the garage. The previous owner was an older guy that just used it for hunting.
I bought a 2008 Arctic Cat 400 a few years ago for $2200. It has not hit 1k miles yet. I use it to drag deer, plow snow, and yard work. I've changed the oil and gone through two batteries. The key to battery life is to NOT let one go dead. If you do, there is almost no chance for recovery. The damn things are around $100 for a decent one. I bought a trickle charger and use it for the ATV and rolling motor batteries.
I get the Honda hype and appreciate the quality. If I were buying one to use every day on the farm, I'd spend the cash for one and not think twice about it. However, for my occasional needs, I can't justify the additional cost. I looked for a Honda when I was in the market and could not find one for under $3k that wasn't beat to hell and worn out.

From my experience a UTV is more useful than an ATV. The bed and the passenger seat are nice to have. I built racks for mine to haul 2 ladder stands fully assembled. I would put a lot of thought into how you will be using it and decide which is best for you.

At 5k you are close to the price of a brand new ATV in the 400 class.

My old 1986 Honda Big Red 250ES three wheeler is still doing everything I want it to do and it hasn't crippled or killed me yet like our government said they would.

UTVs are great for around the house/farm but for in the woods they are to big to maneuver. Especially if you to need off the trail to go get a deer.

One thing I found out recently is that with a carb., it didn't run as good as expected once I hit about 10,000' elevation. AND it's cold blooded. So, if and when I get another one it will be fuel injected.

I have a Polaris Ranger 500 that I bought new last year in Illinois for $7300. It is a mid sized but works great on my farm. Starts up every time and will go anywhere. It has 1 wheel turf drive, 2 wheel both rear tires turning or true all 4 wheels turning 4WD. Resale is great on the Rangers. If you use them for farm use, you can avoid the sales tax.

I like Yamaha. Used to have a Honda and Yamaha atv. Yamaha was a better designed machine and caused me less problems. Sold them and bought a Honda utv. They are just not designed as well in my opinion. Thinking about selling it and buying a Yamaha. Won't go back to a atv, utv is just better for what I do. Lots of other brands, I just don't have any experience with them.

I would have said Arctic Cat last year. I bought a 2001 new and had no trouble till this year. Normal scheduled maintenance and a couple batteries cause I always have mine on a battery maintainer that only charges when the battery drops below 100% and kicks back off. However, I am having brake issues this year and found my machine has outlived parts availability! AC has no hoses for my machine and the master cylinder is over $100!
For parts availability and price, I would get a Honda.

Wait until the new year comes around. All the manufacturers do dealer incentives. This past March I got a new Polaris 570 sportsman for $4500 and could not be happier. Very powerful machine. On demand 4wd. It doesn't have power stearing though. But it came with all the warranties.

There is a couple places that have advertised the Polaris Sportsman 570's here recently for $4250 new. Im looking to buy one for next years Elk hunt.
I had a 800 Sportsman but after seeing the difference in fuel consumption my Ranger 500 has compared to the twin cylinder 800 Ill never go that big again.
