The rain kept me in the house this morning. When it cleared up a little I decided to head out with my daughter. As I was getting my gear on I threw out my back. I've had issues with it since an accident in high school. Even though it felt like a knife was stuck in my back we went on out. A short while later I got a 20 yard shot at a doe. It looked like a good hit but when I found the bolt it had signs of a gut shot. We went back to the house to give her some time. I laid on a heating pad for an hour and then it started to rain. We decided to head on out before the blood was washed away. It was a tough trail to follow with very little sign. We jumped her twice before she was down for good. The shot went through one lung and exited through the stomach on the far side. Of course she ran down hill the entire time and expired in a bottom. I drug her as far as my back could take it and then called my brother in law for help getting her up the hill. I didn't want my daughter trying to drag a deer out. She is running in the Semi State Cross Country meet next weekend and I didn't want her to get hurt. Even though I was in pain and soaked I had a great time sharing the experience with my daughter. She will be going off to college next summer. This will be her last deer season at home. Moments like this are quickly coming to an end and I cherish every single one. I wish she would try to get a deer for herself but the weekends are her time to rest and recuperate from school and all the running she does.

Congrats on a successful hunt and yes enjoy those memories. My kids are grown up and gone, and with my son in the military stationed in New Jersey my recovery will be shared with my dad who is 70 and still hunting.
