Today, I had the opportunity during lunch to spend some time sighting in my Henry .22 Mag pump action. I was at the Crosley range. What a great experience. The Rangemaster was friendly and helpful. I just wish it was a little closer for me. It just happened that I was working in the North Vernon area. I started with the 30 yard range and then with approval I was allowed to pop a few shots at the 10 yard range. It seems to me that in the past few years I've missed more squirrels at 10 yards or less. So, this allowed me to see a better view of my bullet drop! I have not shot at Atterbury yet and I wondered what some of you think of their range. Most times I'm shooting at my buddy's place but that is not always feasible. Just curious where you all like to shoot...

Did you cross the green bridge getting to crosley range?
I grew up shooting at that place.

I like Roush Lake. The baffles make it a little louder, but it is still bearable. The benches are Ok but I reccomend you take your own rest. They just have chunks of wood to pile up and they are not that stable. East facing but under the cover it is not bad. There is plenty of room most of the time. Weekends can get crowded though. Pistol gets the most use followed by the 50 yard line. I do not remember seeing the 100 yard covered up. The 10 minute relays are a PITA when shooting muzzle loaders but it works. I have to really watch when I shoot my flintlock there. No flash shields so depending on where I shoot I usually staple up a piece of cardboard so I do not sprat the other shooters. Pigeon River is better since they have put on a range officer. They are very limited on the amount of shooters they can handle. The little huts there are crowded on most weekends.

Atterbury isn’t bad either, although I haven’t used it in a few years. Used to go quite often. Wait until a cold rainy day and I’ve had the place to myself. Weekends can get a little busy.

Same for Roush Lake except it is only $4 per day. DNR employees run the range and keep things safe. I see on the Atterbury rules it is $50 for hitting the baffles.

Did you cross the green bridge getting to crosley range? I grew up shooting at that place. I did cross that bridge. 4 ton weight limit!? I figured...yep we’re good! Not much space left at the mirrors edge. Pretty cool old bridge!

Roush lake is cool. Range masters are colorful characters and very knowledgeable. The regulars are pretty sociable.

I've actually never been to a shooting range. I shoot out in the hayfield.

The range out in New Castle at Wilbur Wright is the only one I go to. Grandpa took me to atterbury once before they rebuilt the range. WW isn't bad they have a range master on duty. 25 and 50 yd ranges and a skeet Lane, they have a thrower, they keep it in the barn. Weekends are busy...

I have the privilege of belonging to Martinsville Conservation club, Top notch club, it has 4 pistol ranges that range from 25 yrds to 50 yrds,1 100 yrd range and 1- 100 to 300 yrds range. The Board and members do a great job of running and keeping it clean and maintained. Here is the link to the web site check it out if you like. www.sportsmansconservationclub.org

We used to go to the stripper hills, plenty of safe places to shoot back in those days. Now we use the range at Sugar Ridge. Go early and avoid the weekends and it's not to busy.

I have 2 favorite ranges.
1) The range next to the barn. targets set at 100, 200, 300 and 350 yds. The 350 yd one can be made into a 400 yd one by moving the shooting bench. The best thing I like about it is that there are no interruptions, and I can check the target anytime I want to without having to worry about other shooters.
2) Young's Longshot in Wolcottville. It is an hour plus drive, but it's the only place I know of that has steel targets set up from 100 yds to 1,000 yds. Private range, you have to be a member or a guest.

I live 3 miles from Wilbur Wright range. Not a bad range at all, but only have 25 and 50 yard ranges. Like to shoot centerfire rifles at least 100 yards.

I prefer free but safe so I usually drive 45 minutes further to Crosley where they also have a 200 yd range. If your going on a nice weekend, get there early. The range officer for the last few times I've been is top notch; hard-working and friendly.

Winamac Fish & Game area has a great shooting range I've used many times. Very nice facility with benches and an overhead canopy for shade. Go on a week day and you just about have the place to yourself.
