Just found out a full moon in July is referred to as the buck moon due to antlers being in full growth mode. I've been hunting deer for a long time and find it strange this reference has escaped me.

I've never heard of it either. Does full-growth mean that they're done growing, or just growing full-speed?
Regardless, I would think that it's a regional thing. A lot of our bucks have already dropped their horns when the rut is just getting started down south.

Yes, by July (mid) the growth is over so it's the buck moon. Almost forgot, it's also the thunder and hay Moon to the hay farmers. I'm sure there's more names.

Deer I've seen on camera's the last few days look like still growing. Got bulbs on end of tines.

They will grow till middle or end of August. A deer will start rubbing velvet off at the exact time the antlers are done growing which happens at some point in september here.

Hit this road kill last august 24th. Clearly not done and is bulbed. Looks good freeze dried and mounted on my wall though.

I heard Indy weatherman, Randy Ollis, mention this some time back. I'd never heard it before.
