Saw something That made me think of what I consider an interesting question: If you suddenly had the total authority, outside of current state law, to manage your county for deer, what would you do and why? Note also where your county is. (North, central, south, etc) I'm in Jefferson, extreme southern IN. I might cut the amount of bonus tags. I would also offer a second $150 trad-only buck tag. Making it trad only would make fears of overharvest moot, and it would raise a nice chunk. There would also be fine revenue from the caught cheaters ! Crossbows would be allowed for the disabled.

Jasper County, NW Indiana. I would reduce our antletless from 8 to 4. Everything else can stay the same.

I forgot to say that I think the DNR does a pretty good job. This is just for fun, not meant to express dissatisfaction.

Only allow myself and a few choice others to hunt the entire county. Any weapon can be used and any deer can be taken.

I would leave it "as is" with the exception of one thing...
I would ban the use of game cameras from October 1 through the end of the deer hunting season...

Delaware County East Central.
Wouldn't do much. Probably take away the bonus tags for at least a year and then have a limited availability after that.
OBR would deff stay where it is.

Programs to return the non used fields and fescue yards back to native grass-bushes-trees for all wildlife. No more green manicured lawn mentality. No GMO food or products. Promote good land practices. Give discount to individuals to install pond, marsh and stream habitat. Remove all regulations that inhibit hunting. Earn bonus dollars using points per each non-native insects/plants and animal that is removed and or destroyed. The bonus dollar credits only on hunting/land management and purchased within state. The store owners basically give the bonus dollars back to state for a closed system. The business incentive is additional people traffic in that store to buy more that just the bonus dollar items. Make it a win-win solution for state and private business. These practices would increase the deer population.

A lot of what you ask for can be done through CRP or forest programs or atleast a cost share at the state and fed level. They would of helped me build and stock my pond years ago but I had to open it to the public so I paid to put it in myself, I do get cost share on forested /CRP ground but it’s a way less than I could make if it was farmed. That’s ok by me I always wanted to do something along this line and have no regrets but the down side is my land is now worth less than if it was tillable ground like I bought it and I’ve made 1/2 of what I could of off it. One of the big problems as to why you see woods fence rows and the likes get cleared

Any landowner with 20 acres or more of agriculture land would have their property taxes waived in exchange for free public access to hunt their land.

I'd also introduce mule deer to Lawrence County. I’d swear I saw a mulie doe on 446 in southern Monroe county many years ago when I used to hunt Lawrence county quite a bit I stopped and watched her and she sure looked like a mule deer to me.

Any landowner with 20 acres or more of agriculture land would have their property taxes waived in exchange for free public access to hunt their land. I'm in partial agreement with this. My thought would be the landowners can earn up to a 50% reduction in property taxes based on the level of accessibility they allow. Full access earns them a 50% property tax reduction. Create a landowner bundle license that allows landowners and family members to hunt anything for $10/year. Change the county bonus antlerless quota to just a county antlerless quota no matter what weapon, season, license used. Change deer licenses to come with one statewide either sex tag and one antless only tag for $60 and an antlerless license that comes with 2 antlerless only tags for $40 but can only be bought after the purchase of the $60 license. Make these licenses good the entirety of that years hunting season. Ban all bait, mineral, feed avenues for everybody. The only legal means would be plant, fertilize, cultivate native plant and normal farming practices. Implement a 1 deer per day limit not to exceed the annual limit. Decatur County, SE portion of the state. Oh, I would much rather have my dreams cover the entire state. :-)

Let IDNR manage our deer herd as they see fit without outside influences from politician's and hunters and groups.
