Just wanted to start a discussion and info exchange on deer ammo. My start for next year if I have to use my shot gun it will be: $3.75 a round Remmington Copper Solids (They work and are accurate so I dont have to reinvent the wheel) $0.72 Hornady SST steel case 7.62x39. Have never used an ar for hunting and these have a good rep and are very accurate. $1.25 450 Bushmaster Hornady SST. I intend to use as my main deer thumper as its the same bullet I've used in my muzzy for years; my only wish of it would be better blood trails. Ive been buying my ar ammo from Vizzards lately without any drama.

I just use cheap Remington sluggers. 2.75 inch about $1 a round kills deer pretty dead. I have shot the copper solids and enjoyed the results but my deer never were anymore dead than the ones I’ve shot with the sluggers.

In my .44 mag I use Barnes Vor-tx ammo. They run about a $1.30 per...Before I switched to the Barnes, I shot Winchester white box ammo. They were about a $1.00 per round.
I bought a compass in .308 when Dick's was selling them cheap last year. I'm shooting Hornady ammo out of it. Those run about $1.30 or so, too.
Back in the days of shotgun hunting, I too used copper solids. They were expensive...

$.38 for my flintlock using cast ball. Remington sluggers work good, not sure about current price but I have a bunch. .44 mag $.80 if I buy, about $.60 if I reload.

When I'm using the 44 mag rifle or 35 Rem Contender pistol it's ammo I've reloaded and not sure what it comes out to,I haven't figured it up. If I'm using the 30-06 rifle I think they're around a dollar a load but not positive. If I'm using the Contender 45 cal muzzle loader, again I haven't figured up so I don't know. I've never used a shotgun so no info on that either. Man I'm just full of important information aren't I?

I reload my own; haven't checked cost in many years. 30-06: 165gr GameKing 260: 140gr GameKing 6mm R.E.M.: 95gr NoslerBT
These are the most likely candidates

I use Remington core-locks in the 30-06 and the .308. 150 grain. Less than $20 a box at local mart.

Hunting is expensive if anyone hasnt noticed! Ammo is one of the cheaper things. My 4Runner gets 18 to 19 mpg and a round trip to my spot is about 80 miles. So that is 4 gallons at $3.00 a gallon. $12 for one day of hunting. I’ll hunt a minimum of 30 Days.

I’ve been known to drive a 200 mile round trip to do a morning hunt in my excursion that’s diesel and gets 12 mpg. Just a hobby. If I kept track of costs I probably wouldn’t do it. Last year was the first in a long time I’ve used a shotgun and those slugs sure aren’t cheap. Usually use the muzzy, but now have a 30-06 as well and use the core lokt ammo, which isn’t bad at all.

With all the expense we put into hunting, it's still cheaper than paying a therapist. :-)

My 12ga is only "accurate" with Rem Accutip saboted slugs, which typically cost more than $2.60/rd.
My 7.62x39 AR shoots sub-MOA with Hornady Z-Max @ $0.90/rd.
Practice makes perfect which means periodic range trips. Which one do you think I prefer to use?
That being said, you can't put a price on fun. However, money is a finite resource, so I prefer to save money where I can.

Ammo while hunting is probably the cheapest part of my hunting. Hunted three states last year; shot one with crossbow, one with archery and one with rifle. Used two bolts / arrows which just needed the Muzzy razor blades replaced at maybe $3.00 each and one .257 mag bullet at maybe $3.00. Getting rifles zeroed can get a bit expensive but it's still peanuts compared to cost of licenses, transportation, gear, tree stands, processing, etc.
