Taking the family up to Mackinaw City, MI. We were there about 10yr ago before we had our boy. He is almost 8yo now, and hoping he will remember the experience.
The draw for me was seeing and crossing the bridge. It is 5mi long over the water, 7mi total including the approaches. There is a historical shop or museum on the southern end, and is full of facts and figures of the building of the bridge. Very interesting.
We will be taking a ferry boat tour of the bridge, and then over to Mackinac Island. First time there for me. Wife was there years ago as a kid, and still remembers it well. There is no motorized transportation, either bikes, horses, or hoofing it.
Looking forward to getting away for a couple days in a very hectic time lately!

We went there a few years ago. The old fort was my favorite thing to see on the island. Bring some cash, everything is expensive (like $10 for a slice of pizza expensive).
If your son likes to swim, Wilderness State Park is close by and has a nice beach. The slope of the beach is very gradual, you can get quite a ways out and only be waist deep. The water was crystal clear when we were there, and surprisingly warm.
Oswald's bear ranch is about 1 1/2 hours from the bridge, it's pretty cool as well. They'll give you a bag of apples to toss over the fences to the bears.
Don't forget to get some pasties!

Save that for the hotel pool and hot tub. Plan is to eat a good breakfast prior to going over on the island. Then only a snack if needed during the day, and save dinner for the mainland. Not real excited about those kinds of prices. But I do realize that is how those people make their living, gouging the tourists. Lol. This will be our first real family vacation, so I cant do much complaining. Our normal time away is KY or WV to visit wifes kin folk. We would be doing that this time, but some scheduling conflicts arose, so we are doing plan B.

Just got home from work. Couldnt be at a better time too, everything imploding today. It was a horrible week, busy as heck, boss had terrible attitude, everything going wrong, being blamed for anything and everything. I am 99% sure they dont even realize I will be off next 2 days. They scheduled in way too much work, and several big jobs. Starting a 5 day, holiday vacation, and glad I will be 350 miles away!

Take some time to go across the bridge and explore the UP. It's beautiful up there!

We made it back home. Hit a hail storm near Wolverine, MI. It stopped traffic on I75. Unfortunately, my wifes Highlander got dinged up pretty good. She was sitting there with a very sick look on her face. I cant believe the windshield held together and the sunroof didnt explode. It was deafening!!! I told her it was a souvenir. Lol.
Anyway, had a great time otherwise. We were up against a storm coming in on Mackinac Island. I pulled the plug to end the day and get the next ferry back to main land. The ride was twice as long as normal due to wind and waves. We just made it to the hotel when it let loose.
We decided to take a carriage ride on the island. We got dropped off at a stop to take a different carraige thru the state park. The drivers narrated the tour, and were both spectacular. It seemed like a better deal than renting bikes while carrying our stuff.
We even ended up eating lunch there. Prices werent bad. Around $10 for burger, fries, and cole slaw. Prices probably go up for the peak season. All in all, we had a good time. I recommend the trip!
We went up to Sault Ste Marie and saw the locks in action. We watched a thousand foot freighter come thru and be lowered the 21ft difference between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. Pretty danged cool to see.
As said, we ate at the Antlers restaraunt on the advice or treetop (Dave). Thank you fine sir! It was an experience we all enjoyed and will never forget. I had the "Bigfoot" meal. It was a one pound burger, (two patties), and fries. Polished that baby off like it was childs play. Lol. The scenery was great. Game mounts and antlers everywhere! Check out the website.
So, it was a very enjoyable vacation. The family really enjoyed it. Looking forward to our next adventure now!
