My son is looking to purchase his own floor jack. He’s tired of coming over and borrowing one of mine. He’s looking at one of the rapid pump jacks from Harbor Freight. It seems they have decent prices and reviews. I’m suggesting that he get a minimum 3 ton. Any thoughts and experience here?

I have a 3 ton from HF and it works fine and I agree on the jack stands. Rapid pump isn’t a must but you really notice it when you use one without it especially at times when you don’t have a lot of room to pump handle. I also have an aluminum frame jack that I carry in the truck.

I have a harbor freight jack not the rapid pump as I figure it’s just something else to go wrong. It’s been through a lot and is still working. I am happy with it

I've used both the fast and slow models, no problems with each. Have him measure the distance he will need to lift. If it's going to be used on a PU truck, then one with a short lift range won't work.
I have one of those aluminum ones and like it for it's portability.
I have had Sears jacks that lasted way longer than they should. I know that the quality now isn't the same when these were purchased.

That was going to be another point make sure he gets the appropriate jack for the job at hand

Wow a high speed jack! Where have I been? I have one regular AUTOZONE sells. I got it as a package deal with two jackstands. Works fine for what I have and has lasted for a while. I carry it in my van and have used it a time or two on roadside tire changes. It sure beats the factory scissor jack. It is good advice to make sure it will work for all vehicles.

Buy a light weight aluminum one with the large single roller instead of two wheels.

As with any other piece of equipment, buy the best thing that you can comfortably afford.

He ended up with the Harbor Freight weekend special: Used it all weekend on brake job on a 2002 Denali and it worked perfectly. For the money it seems to be a pretty decent jack.

Glad to hear it works well. I need to get myself one. The one I have I managed to bend the frame using it on something that might have been bigger than I should have.

I bought a 3 ton rapid lift jack probably 20 years ago. It only lasted a couple of years and quit working. I replaced it with a regular Craftsman jack set (3 ton floor jack, jackstands, fender protector, and seat creeper) and they are all still working great.

I know a guy that has that same one it’s great except if you are trying to take something out from under the vehicle that has significant height like a transmission. But for brakes and normal Maint it is good one. Mine is the same without rapid pump
