Well, believe it or not I've gone up until now without internet at my house. I spend a lot of time on the computer at work and can do my browsing on my phone, so up until recently I haven't had much need for it. I'm doing some online education stuff now though, and going to the library every time I need internet connection to my laptop is getting pretty old.
ATT can hook me up via fiber optic cable, and looks like my only good option since Comcast doesn't serve my address. The only option they have for me though is a 50 MBPS plan with a 1TB monthly cap. While I don't think we'll hit that cap, is that speed considered good enough for running something like Netflix? We had to cancel our satellite TV last spring when the trees leaved out, we practically live in the woods and can't get a good signal. It would be nice if we could get some entertainment value out of it as well.

That speed should be fine for Netflix unless you are using multiple devices to stream at once (one of you on the laptop, a kid playing games, and Netflix, then it might slow you down some. But you should be good to go at that speed.

Like was said that speed should work just fine. If you are able to hit that 1tb cap I’d be amazed. That’s a ton of data, 1,000 gigs. We don’t have Internet, but between the two phones we go through about 80 gigs a month including the hotspots.

A true 50M will stream to multiple devices at the same time with no problems. You only need 1-2M per HD stream.

Yeah you should be good with that. Also count your blessings it's ATT and not Comcast. I've had both and while ATT isn't ideal Comcast is like pulling teeth, very slowly.

That's all good to hear, thanks everyone. They're supposed to install Thursday, hopefully everything works as advertised.

I'm surprised you can get fiber optic internet if the area is that rural, but that's good news.
According to a Google search, 1 hour of standard definition Netflix streaming uses 1 gb and high def uses about 3 gb.
There are 1,024 gb in 1 tb so you could stream about 341 hours of hd video, which is over 11 hours a day for 30 days. I think you'll be ok unless you have lots of people doing a lot of streaming every day.

We're really not all that rural, city limits stop halfway between my house and the road, but it's a narrow, out of the way road that alot of people don't even know about. We're also surrounded by grown-up airport property on 2 sides and woods on the other 2. But we can be to the town square in less than 10 minutes. I'm glad we can get it, a dish wouldn't work at my house..

You are getting it through plain ol phone lines. Only way you can get true fiber speed is from head end all the way to your house and throughout your house. Unless they ran them to your house and when the house was built you ran fiber throughout. When the installer gets done have one of YOUR devices handy with a speed test on it and do a speed test while they are there. The speed will be somewhere between 2 and 10 download speed, which is what you'll be using for Netflix. Upload speed is what the are promising, but I doubt you'll get that even. Downtown Bedford, the highest I've seen upload was 16 at the most download and he was paying salty for it. Anything above 3 download and you'll be fine. If you're not paying extra for enhanced internet, don't worry what they promise as long as you're above minimum 3 download. 6 is really where you want to be. If you miss your satellite I can come over some time and take a look. 95% of homes can get satellite, it's just a matter how hard the installer wants to work. You might end up having to bury some cable and have a pole somewhere you don't want but usually it's possible.

Thanks- I know ATT came by shortly after we moved in here to try and sign us up, and my understanding was that the fiber optic was at the road.. maybe not. I really don't know how all that affects speed and what speed I really need. As long as we have a reliable connection and can stream videos I'll be happy. Thanks for the offer on the dish; hopefully we can stream some stuff with the internet and solve that issue.

If they are selling you a 50M service you will likely get that 50M....that speed can be delivered a multitude of ways so even if there is not fiber terminating at your house you should still get 50M.
50M is entry level speeds....but it is more than enough for the majority of home users.

That's 50 upload speed which has nothing to do with watching video. Either way I'll bet you a steak dinner he's not going to get it especially where he lives. We had to do a speed test at every job we went to to hook up on demand. No one gets that with att in that area. If they are promising you that with a base fee and you are not paying extra for it, so be it. If you are paying extra for that speed, then demand to see it on your device with your speed test.

I've never heard of a consumer service with a faster upload than download...it's a 10:1 ratio with my local service providers. I have 100M down and 10M up. I guess we'll find out once it's installed. I do deal with att in the Indianapolis area but for commercial circuits which are 1:1. I have 100M on two different circuits and 200M on a third location. These circuits aren't internet commodity though...they connect a WAN back to a main location that has a 10G connection with 1.5G of internet commodity.

Well it's installed and functional. span870 was right about the fiber optic cable, closest connection is around a mile from my house, phone line from there. He ran a test when he installed it and got a 14 Mbps download speed, I ran it on my laptop and got a 12.5 Mbps, so it's somewhere in there. It seems to play YouTube and Instagram videos without delay. Hopefully when I get some TV set up everything works alright.

Very surprised you got those speeds though. Very few people are getting that even downtown. I know they were doing alot of upgrading before I had my surgery. Those numbers can drop a minimal amount during peak times depending on where you are on the line. I'd guess with that speed you are getting that from a head end to where you are, not many people are on your line. Like I said, at those speeds, you can stream any of the Hulu, Firefox, and Netflix without issue.

I’m in the process of dropping Wowway TV and using the Amazon FireStick.
My download is 14.7 and every now and then the picture will freeze for a few seconds and then it starts back up again. Not often and it’s not enough to make me go back to Wowway
Much better picture though..

Mine's running a little slower than normal today. Just under half a meg download, and just under a quarter meg upload, and this is the only computer in the house currently running. Usually, it's around six tenths meg download speed.
ATT DSL, so far the only thing still available here. Reliable and cheap, but reliably slow.
I did manage to watch a western movie on it a couple weeks ago without waiting for "buffering" or any interruptions, but it was in standard def and seemed a little fuzzy even for that (maybe there's some less-than-standard def version?). Surprised me that it didn't stop to let the download catch up every few seconds.
Usually have to wait for it even downloading U-tube vids.
Never tried downloading much sports, but may give it a try now that the olympics are on. Curling looks like it might be a good candidate, or senior golf after the olympics 8^)
