Another vote for the 6.5' beds. A buddy has the shorter one and he can't fit much in it. Has to have it or the truck won't fit in his garage. Time for a bigger garage! I have had 2 short beds, and they are gone! I hate the single cab I got, but love the long bed. Dont know I could live with out. Unfortunately, a 4 door long bed is like a bus! I agree with the 4 door long bed being a school bus, but the 4 door 6'-4" bed ain't bad. It's the 8' bed with that size cab that is the bus. I use a trailer a lot of times, and I have no problem backing it up. BUT, not having a trailer behind the truck sure makes life easier. My buddy can't make the garage bigger - no room on the property to do so. He lives in the city and there just isn't room on the city lot to do so. Having the caps on the bed is nice, but getting stuff out of the front is hard. A buddy made a slide out system for his bed. A frame was bolted to the bed, and he could slide out the whole 4'x8' floor. A leg automatically dropped down to support it. No more crawling into the bed to get stuff. He made it himself out of angle iron, "C" channel and skate board wheels.

I like the looks of a short bed, but the utility of a long bed. I know the HD trucks still offer 4 doors and an 8' bed, but I'm not sure it's even an option on the 1/2 tons anymore.

Just get an excursion and problem solved. With the seats down I can haul 8 ft boards inside. Even had 16 ft 6x6s hanging out the back window when we built our deck. I also have a trailer for any bulky items.

No it isn't, at least not with new Ram trucks. Regular cab can get an 8' box, all the 4 door versions are either a 5'-7" or 6'-4" box. The crew/mega cabs are available with the 8'box in the 2500 (3/4 ton) models.

Having the caps on the bed is nice, but getting stuff out of the front is hard. I keep an aluminum boat docking hook on the rail of my truck bed. Can load and retrieve darned near anything in front of bed without crawling in after a little practice. Quite a few of my buddies saw this and now have them in pick-ups.

I believe the the 6 1/2 foot beds are now the "standard" bed for all half ton trucks these days.
I completely agree that a 4 door 8' bed is an interesting driving experience, but man is the room nice when you need it. The biggest issue is how often one actually needs it.

I like my 6’ bed extended cab but often wonder how did we get along with standard cabs all those years?
