Have a chest freezer. I'd guess it might be 5-6 years old. Anyway don't work and want to turn it into a cold smoker. Everything put into it will be cold smoked. Do I have to rip the plastic lining out of it before doing this? It will have the smoked pumped in from the outside so very little heat will be getting into the inside.

If there is a local newspaper they may sale their old printing plates (ours does pretty cheap) be a cheap way to line it

For cold smoking I would leave it in there. Don't see where it would cause any issues.

My opinion is you would be fine with it in but run the risk of ruining a batch of smoked whatever.
I bet we could find plenty of fridges here in laco so if you mess up we can go looking in sink holes. Anyone have a need for an old porcaline coated bathtub? I can make you a deal

I am no expert but I would warn you about galvanized metal. I have read that it can be toxic. I spent a long time researching smokers when I built my first one. Using freezers and refrigerators was a big no no.

Cold smoking is less than 110F and more likely less than 90 F. That is different than hot smoking that can exceed 200 F.
Risk with plastic is melting. Do a trial run and run temp to 125 or so. If plastic does not become disformed or brittle then if shojld be fine.
I would replace galvanized parts.

I think galvanized doesn’t really put off gas until like 325 I’d be more concerned about the plastic if you replace the nice thing would be you would be able to run hot smoke if you needed to

I would gut it out just to be on the safe side, the plastic walls might emit a smell that could effect your meats flavor.
