I still don't like it.
To add to that, I'm still in a stand. 15 year old boy decided he wanted to deer hunt. We have been going non stop since Saturday morning. All day sit yesterday except for about 30 minutes. It's 130 now and still in stand today. Got down to check on a buddy that came down to hunt. Sounded like ww3 by him. Somehow he grazed the top of a doe back just enough to knock her down. Trailed her for quite awhile and she'll be fine. Maybe a cup of blood total and extremely short hairs. Says he hit her below the spine but I'm leaving towards way higher.
Anyway this kid won't give up. Let him take today off thinking he'd be brown and down and be done for the year. NOPE. Now he's trophy hunting. We've passed 4 buck so far. Little brat is eating into my hound running time. Will say this. The kid is addicted to electronics yet he's been on his phone maybe 30 minutes the last three days. Now momma said he can have off tomorrow since he never misses school and is a straight a student. That'll give him the rest of the week off. Now I have to burn a week's PTO because he wants to deer hunt all week. How does someone go from not liking deer hunting to being an addict that quick? How can a 15 year old boy sleep that much btw? And how does he always get the backrest of the tree in the ladder stand. I'm stuck pretty much sitting straight up all day. He did get to watch a 6 dog a doe. All stiff legged and sniffing on her. Looks at me and says, man he looks stupid. Told him, that's what you look like at school chasing girls.
You know what? Wouldn't give it up for the world.

It'll be over too soon. Jobs, wives, kids, etc. all have a way of happening over night. Next thing you know you hardly see them. Hopefully he'll want to keep the deer hunting tradition alive for a few days out of the year in the future.

Enjoy the time together...as has already been said, other distractions will creep in on him and you will likely be looking back with fond memories on this time!

Good job getting him out there! I am surprised, though, that duff hasn't stepped in by now and put that kid on a whopper.

I know earlier this year we talked about your son and his interests and whether or not he should be playing football, getting a job, stuff like that--sounds like he found himself a new passion!! Thanks for the write-up, Span. I love reading about kids falling in love with this stuff. Hope your dogs have been nailin them rabbits this season (even if he IS cutting into your dog-running time, haha).

Two of the funniest things I've heard in a long he's said in the last two days.
First. So why are the ones you don't wanna shoot so dumb. When is he going to go away. What's he doing? He's coming back again. Stupid deer.
Second. Thats it. I'm done jacking around. Tomorrow I'm killing three deer.

You can't make it happen for yourself. How you going to do it for someone else. You've been feeding lawrencecountyhunter a bunch of bull and I see he bought into it.

Thanks! It was really interesting for me to read this. What are your thoughts on some deer feeders, by the way? I am looking for some and need your tips or recommendations as I don't know which to go for. I have found some interesting options for me on under-the-open-sky.com/best-deer-feeder/ What do you think about them? Thanks in advance for help!

I wish I could deer hunt an entire week. Normally I pack breakfast lunch and dinner in my pack along with two thermoses of coffee and then I am ready to go for the day. I might not be the best deer hunter I've been hunting for 8-9 years now and have only ever shot 2 deer. But every time I walk out of the woods with my stand just after last light has faded away I feel great. Besides there are way worse things than an obsession with going outside and hunting. I have freinds who don't do anything but play videogames.
