I had an excellent 10 pt in my yard tonight when I came home from work. I didn't even notice until I had gotten dressed to hunt and was shutting the back door to let dogs in. I managed to walk around house and buck stood with a doe at 40 us almost to the spot my target normally sits. I watched, admired, dreamed etc as it would been my best bow kill. I then proceeded to push doe back into edge of brush and walk around. I could of made the shot but didn't feel right. I don't want to take a buck of that caliber that way. I may never see him again but I don't care at least till last eve with a tag in hand. I went back to farthest stand just because of it and just sitting her wondering have I matured as a hunter or just weak. lol. Oh well it gave me a rush and that is why I hunt.

If you had the tag, were on your own property, were obeying all the laws, and weren't "tricking" the animal in anyway, I don't think it would have been unethical.
Sure it would have been super convenient and simple, but what is your house if not a permanent blind lol.
I do understand though the feeling of it not being right due to it being far too easy.

Not quite hunting is it?
Good on you...

Legal yes, by not quite hunting in my sense. I prefer sneaking around on their turf not mine. Probably should of just stayed home and watched as it would have been more exciting.

I had (past tense because it sold recently) an opportunity to hunt the woods that butts up to my yard but just couldn't bring myself to do it. I like watching my yard deer not killing then.
Nothing wrong with killing them though...

I would have dropped him in heartbeat.

I could shoot game all day long around the house. Just can’t bring myself to do it either. Except for squirrels, they get into everything. When deer lay in your yard, doesn’t seem to sporting to shoot them.

Ethics are subjective, that's for sure. I, myself, would have probably busted him on the spot -- except for the fact that he was 10 yards past my ethical 30-yard max. Lol! See, even though I practice out to 60 yards here at the house, I won't take an initial shot at a deer beyond 30 yards due to my personal ethics. I've taken two "finishing" shots beyond that.
I'd have no problem shooting a deer in my yard, as its senses are exactly the same in the woods as they are in my yard. I'd own up to it and not fabricate some grand story about how I killed it. I've only killed one deer in my yard, and it was a button buck (thought it was a doe) with a shotgun. I was on the computer and saw it out the window.

My deer shoot house is only about 100 yards from my house, my duck blind is about 300 yards from my house. I don't feel guilty about shooting ducks on my marsh and don't feel guilty about shooting deer that probably have walked through my yards many time. I bought and groomed this property for those reasons, what I do feel bad about is if a deer gets killed by a car on the road in front of my home.

I legally can and, if given the opportunity, would shoot a deer in my yard. I have tried before, but never been able to get into position for a clean shot. Now, it's not often that I see deer in the yard, so its not like I'm watching them from spots to maturity. But occasionally two or three will root around under a big white oak.

If you didn't feel right doing it, then you made the right decision.
I've killed several does within 100 yards of my house, but never from the house itself. I have, however, shot a few limits of squirrels from my bathroom window.

Great decision. I used to not hunt 40 yards from my house for the same reason. Just didn't seem right looking at the house and back yard. Last year I threw all that out the door. It' actually harder hunting city/suburb bucks. I think by 2nd year they go nocturnal. Only a hot doe can bring them out. Now, taking a doe during the acorn dropping is easy. I pasted this year thinking I could take one once it got cold. Now for two weeks I seen zero does. Acorns gone and so are the does. My neighbor stopped feeding them so double ram-o and I don't believe in baiting. Legal in Ohio. Next year will be a different story. Building a walk-in cooler.

I may have picked a few off over my mom's bird feeders when I was a kid though.

O no here comes another baiting thread again! Since he used the bathroom window I figured corn was the most likely suspect. :-)

I don't question anybody who would shoot at this deer or any other as it is just a personal one. I don't need the meat honestly that bad and not worried about telling the story. I could legally put dent in the herd from the corner bush off my porch. I guess this deer just made me think about the respect I have for the game we chase. I guess I just over time have become to respect taking any animal as the hunt is more to me than the harvest at times. Trapping a coyote from a 50 acre field and getting it to step on a 2 inch square is to me feels as great as taking a 150 inch deer as it is about the challenge. I can go all season and not take a single shot yet see plenty and have a successful year. Put him next to the stand 300 yards back on the corn field and he is going to be at the house later.

You guys are making me envious. My closest hunting opportunity is an hour away from porch to stand. To be able to even watch deer from your house is a blessing to be cherished.

I have shot one from the deck before. Would have shot a buck from the patio door once but he heard the door open. Wife was upstairs sleeping, what an alarm clock that would have been.

It is a blessing and I often take it for granted. I have watched this buck now for an hr pester a doe and fend off a really nice 8 and a small 8 and 6 from my man cave window with a good mag lite. I have to say after a rather slow couple of weeks it made getting the gun bag and gear ready a little easier.
