I'm from northern Indiana and I have a meeting in Bloomington in a couple of weeks. My nephew has who's a senior in high school and on spring break has asked if we could go on a hunt on big public land before he joins the Marines next year. I thought that this might be an opportunity to do it and I am thinking about taking a few extra days down there. Does anyone down in that general think we could find some good huntable public areas on short notice without much scouting. And if so, if we would be better off going to the HNF rather than brown county? I have been thinking about some of the logistics and want to know if the idea is even feasible. Not looking for any spots, just some general ideas. We probably also need to find a place to stay where we could skin quarter a deer if we got one like a rustic cabbin or something. Your thoughts would be very greatly appreciated!

Not sure what you mean by brown county. HNF is in parts of brown county along with yellowwood state forest. HNF has plenty of areas you can get into and get away from people. Hard part is going to be doing it with no scouting. I hunt some of it around lake Monroe, but it’s right out our camper door so it’s pretty easy access. I’d just do some cyber scouting and find a place that looks good and go from there. Fall break means you’re still bowhunting so pressure won’t be as bad.

Thanks a lot for the information guys and thanks for the clarification on Brown County. For some reason I thought it was not considered part of the NF.
