What would you guys recommend for starting a youngster out with on a muzzleloader?
I current shoot 90gr of blackhorn 209 and a Hornady low drag SST 240gr bullet. Thinking of dialing it down in one gun for a youngster to hunt with inside of 40-50 yds or so. Guns would be a CVA Optima or CVA Wolf. Think they weigh about the same though
thoughts?
Would I be better starting him off with a .357 (marginal round in my opinion) or .44 rifle?

The old 44-40 cartridge has killed a deer or two. That was a bullet around 200 grains and a load of 40 grains of black powder. If you were to back the load down to 60 grains of 209, you'd have what the old cowboys would have called a 44-60.
The round would certainly kill deer cleanly at your indicated range. Recoil should be pretty tame. If it were me, I'd go with the gun that your youngster handles best.

IF staying in ML than definitely just back down the load...to be honest with 60 or 75grains of BP the recoil is going to be rather minimum. Could even start them just in practice back towards 45 or so and work up.

I started my daughter with roundball and 30 grain of powder with a limit of 35 yards. Her first time shooting a 20 gauge bruised her and she was afraid of shooting again. After an hour or so she felt great about the muzzle loader and we worked all the up to 70 grain of powder and 75 yard limit. When we actually went hunting I would put my traditional 90 grain load in the gun and stretch her maximum range to 100 yards. She never noticed the difference because of the adrenalin. She learned to load it herself pretty quick, thoroughly enjoyed shooting, and doubled her gun season all in one package.

My daughter's first deer gun will be a Marlin 44. Superb quality, low recoil, and at 36 inches long she can start using it now and have it for the rest of her life.
My buddy just bought an H&R .44 for his 9 yr old son. He did not want to spend a bunch of money on it because he plans to get him an HPR in a few years. He said that it shoots great.
