I did fall when I was younger and didn't love my family....but love of family must have been pretty rare back then because I didn't know a single person who wore the original "belt" type device that was available. LOL Man those old belt kind were worthless and I HATED THEM.

I'm in the camp that it's not if you fall, it's when. Go up a tree enough times and sooner or later something will happen. And I'm the same...not a fan of heights at all. 100% agree. I would bet at MINIMUM hunt long enough you are gonna have a close call....I remember one year (we didn't have lifelines...we had anchor lines to clip into around the trees and I would climb, clip and then step over) I slipped while clipping on icy step and had I not quickly grabbed the stand with right and and my left was already on steps I guarantee I'd have fallen....we now have lifelines on all stands except the two shortest ones (10 footers in thick thick oaks that you will be stopped by branches before hitting ground LOL) but even those will have lifelines in them before season end or for sure next year.

Hearing the horror stories of them is why I try and carry a knife in my vest to cut myself free if I should fall.

Glad to hear im not the only grown man with a fear of heights lol. It just came on in the last few years but dang I wish I still had the fearlessness of when I was younger. I do wear a harness and have lifelines on most. I ran out this year and have a couple new stands that will get them the first time they're hunted.

I wear one every time out. You never know what your body will do at any moment especially when you get older. Just a few seconds getting light headed etc. Hunters from an tree without one is crazy to me.

I quit hunting out of stands. Buddy fell out several years ago and I never got back in one.

Just the way he worded it...stand fell while he was in it but his harness kept him safe while the stand fell to the ground. That's what I figured. I have a tripod stand, nowhere to tether onto except the stand itself. It makes me feel better about falling out, but if the whole thing comes down you're riding it to the ground. that would be one heck of a ride. i wouldnt ever want to ride one down.

I fell off an old baker climber when I was about 15 ( I'm 58 now ) I was climbing a tree and grabbed a limb that broke sending me backwards and onto the ground. I was young and flexible so I was more scared than hurt. I was only about 10 foot high. Now I use a summit with a vest and spyder fall restraint thing that if you fall lowers you at a controlled rate to the ground.

I just received another three pack of lifelines for around $70 from Amazon. I absolutely will not get in a stand without my harness and a lifeline. Period! And yes, I have forgot my harness more than once and spent the morning sitting UNDER my stand. Both times it happened in very cold weather and I was worried about sweating on the way up the hill. Harness left in truck.
I started deer hunting 28 years ago and wore a belt harness at all times. Looking back, I'd have better off hitting every limb and then the ground.
My knucklehead brother did not wear a harness until a few years ago. I explained to him that I had no interest in raising his kids due to his ignorance. I told mom to buy him one for Christmas and he has wore it every since.

Proves they don't love their family? Come on, you're smarter than to say something like that. I wear one at all time....won't go up a tree without one. I know hunters who don't though and I won't question their love of family. I'll question their common sense though. I stand by my comment. Is their love sure, but I'd question to what point. To me personally it illustrates someone doesn't care enough to ensure they make it home. Just as poaching has ZERO excuses so does not wearing a harness to me. I don't wear one they make me feel unsafe being all belted up you can question my common sense my love for family all you want I work construction work off trusses roofs and rafters ladders you name it 38 years of it. More people are killed by no helmets seat belts eating too much smoking you name what we don't need is another law This is just a view from some one who doesn't wear one
