Sounds like to me he was overwhelmed with business. Looks like he took more than he could chew.

I wander if the agency ever called or contacted them before hand. Very incomplete story, typical. I know it takes taxidermy a full year or 1.5 years depending. Now hides is just a couple/few weeks. I was thinking of offering my services this year to the group. I would only do a few that aren't trophies. A little rusty and arthritis is not my friend.

Any price points? Planned turnaround time?

I have not decided yet to do a few (3 or 4), but I think so. Mine and 3 more. That is, if I get one. The cost would only be my cost of the materials plus a little more the little stuff like electricity (freezer) costs. So around $150 -$200. If I screw up, nothing. You can go cheap and get cardboard ears and plastic eyes versus plastic ear inserts and glass eyes. I'm not great at it yet. but okay. I need to make sure my wife's okay with it. Not looking to make any profit. Just want to keep my skills going.

We send all our hides to a commercial tannery. Takes 3 to 4 months to get them back once there done. We have about a 8 month to a year turnaround depending on what part of the line you are in. Everybody is in the order they brought it in throughout the season.

But that is ridiculous. Wonder if he even was a taxidermist, or just trying to get some quick cash.

Just have to keep records and allow DNR access to any hides/animals/records at any time requested. I have my license and do critters for family and friends as a hobby. That is how I know what I know. I knew nothing when I started. Watched some taxidermy tapes and did some of my own stuff and then did family on the premise of cost, will do the best I can. Here are a few I have dune

He did three of my deer. Does good work but the last two he did for me took 2 years. Told him I wasn't going back to him. This was 4 or 5 years ago.

It's my understanding from talking to him that he went through a rough divorce a couple of years ago and never really bounced back. I dropped an animal off for him to do in 2015. Can't remember the exact date. He promised I would get it back in 8-10 months. I ignored a couple of red flags while researching him, one being that there were probably 100-150 racks hanging in his shop. There were a couple of people that left reviews online saying he took over a year to get their mounts done. Over 14 months later I had to threaten small claims court to get my mount back. I realize that some guys will take over a year if they are busy but he was never at his shop anytime I would stop by whether it was 9AM, 12PM, or 5 PM. I was also starting to see more complaints online about him. He always had some kind of different excuse about why he wasn't around. He went as far as to send me pics of another mount to try and pass them off as my mine. The icing on the cake was the crappy quality of the mount. It wasn't a whitetail so maybe that had something to do with it.
