I picked up a used Remington 700 BDL, stainless, .30/06 several months ago from a member of another forum that I frequent. That member had acquired it in a trade and didn't know much about it. From all accounts it appeared to have been well-used with lots of scratches, scuffs, and an overall dull finish, but the bore and crown still looked new. My guess is that it was used as a hunting rifle for several years, but not a lot of high volume shooting. I already have a .30/06 with a laminate stock and blued metal, so this one will likely be used primarily on trips where I anticipate lots of precipitation or contact with salt water.
The first thing I did was soak the barreled action and bottom metal in the bathtub and give it a good scrub with soapy water. I then worked it over with 1200 grit sandpaper, followed by another bath, then shined it up with Mother's Mag-Wheel polish. After polishing I gave it a good final cleaning with Rem-Oil.
I replaced the beat up plastic stock with a Grayboe I snatched while on sale. This stock already has machined-in pillars, and upon receipt I went ahead and glass-bedded the areas around the recoil lug, front receiver screw, and rear receiver screw. This was my first attempt at glass-bedding a stock, and although I was pretty worried that I'd inadvertently glue the stock to the action, it came apart fine. It's not a real pretty job to look at, but it's sturdy and the action locks up very solid into the stock. I double-checked and the barrel is still completely free-floated.
Before final assembly, I adjusted the trigger pull, which was still at it's factory setting. I significantly lightened the pull-weight and cleaned up the travel/creep, and it feels much better. I put dabs of glue on each screw to hopefully prevent them from turning over time/recoil.
The rifle came with Leupold rings and bases and a cheaper Nikon scope. I kept the rings/bases and gave away the scope. I finally topped it with a Leupold VX-3i 3.5-10x40.
I probably won't get around to shooting this until after deer season, since my shooting area is on the fringe of one of my hunting areas. I failed to take any before pics, but here is the finished product:

I'm a big fan of the Remington 700 rifles. Have not seen very many of them that weren't quite accurate. Factory trigger can also be adjusted to your liking.

I got this out for some shooting for the first time last night, got a 200 yard zero with 180 gr Core-Locts. I shot a couple 3 shot groups @ 200 after getting the scope where I wanted it, the best group was around 1.5 inches. I have 4 or 5 boxes of other brands and bullet weights in .30/06 that I'll try next to see what it likes best. I'm pretty happy with it so far though.

I have a buddy that uses a 30-06 and he told me once that a lot of guys get good accuracy out of 165 gr. His gun seemed to like 150 gr better though. Will this gun be the gun you take with you to POW?

I'm shooting the 165's out of my 30.06 and it loves them. Took my antelope last year at 289 yards

My 30-06 likes Remington 150 gr. pointed soft points. Been using them for 40 plus years.

Fine looking work. Would have liked to see the before and after comparison. I love 3006. Got my dad's old BDL and it's the most accurate rifle I own. Cover a three shot group with a nickel at 100 yds.
