I'll just go on record now that as for mature buck harvests, this opening weekend for firearms is going to be a doozy unless severe storms occur. Perigee hits a week prior...New Moon is on the 18th...everything I've observed over the years leads these to causing increased movement, especially than factor in most does should be in or coming into first estrous cycle... More than normal will hit dirt this year on opener of firearms....my plan make it happen in October like normal

Assuming good weather, the only drawback I see is the late start date. Last year the firearms season hit the rut pretty well perfect. This year will miss a lot of it.
I'm thinking that this will be a good archery season, especially considering we get basically an extra week of rut hunting before firearms starts. I usually see the most buck activity the first 2 weeks of November.

I'd rather it be week earlier this year will most things I've seen encourage buck movement as a whole occuring around opening firearms this year. I agree though the late start is still a good thing in a big way for us!

Or just focused on good hunting practices?

November is the opener of firearms which I was speaking to. Not October 19th.

Latest start date possible .... weather will be the biggest factor.
We will kill a bunch unless we dont.

We will kill a bunch unless we dont. Always loved this line except it was Grandpa on fishing always saying "We will catch a bunch, unless we don't"

I like the first 2 weeks of November the best. That is why I have a 5 day weekend and 4 day weekend scheduled off work for those first 2 weeks.

I try to save enough vacation days to hunt Veterans Day week. This year it's the 11th so 11/4 - 11/12 , then 17-19 and 24-26. I will hunt the Oct. weekends when cold fronts happen over the weekends. Evening after work at home. Ohio starts Sept. 30

Last season I saw the mac daddy buck chasing a doe on Nov 4 and took my doe on Nov 6 . Same day while taking my deer in saw a buck chasing a doe through a wide open field. IMO chasing phase makes for great hunting opportunity.

Due to normal cycle of does at Homestaed somewhere around October 22nd give or take onward the buck activity and breeding window really starts intensifying.
From the limited (only about 4 years) worth of obvserving our Swamp Property it appears it lags back closer to Halloween
And it is far too new of a property (bought in March of 2016) to formulate a time frame where I start seeing increase buck activity.
All that said prior to those windows I'm hunting know buck bedding to food routes when able to access and exit undetected or observational stands for more data collection. I'll hunt when I can, but never force a hunt when it will do no good (bad winds, conditions, too early to push it type scenarios)

At home I have witnessed year after year two major activities. Around the 25th of Oct. and a few days before Thanksgiving to Thanksgiving. I also see two sizes of fawns every year. The early ones now 85%-90% grown and Thanksgiving fawns now loosing the spots. The three fawns posted yesterday still had fainted spots. 2017 live at the stand. If I see the does with early born fawns I will take some pictures. A big difference in size. The are now showing up under the oak trees.

I rarely get in the stand before the 20th of October, and that's very dependent upon the temperature. I may get out a few times before that this season since I am hunting a new property and want to get more familiarized with the place.
As far as I'm concerned, firearms season can start AFTER Thanksgiving. Whoops, I probably just ruffled some feathers and will start a whole new whizzin' contest.

No ruffled feathers, but I would like to know why? Simply because I enjoy the woods much more before the madness of firearms season. Now, don't get me wrong, I'll be out there with my orange hat and .44 on opening day like most others.
