Today I acquired a Mossberg ATR in .308. The rifle is unfired and was given to me for free by a longtime friend. It has a Barska 4-16X scope mounted currently. My questions are as follows: Just how likely is this scope and cheap rings to hold zero? Is replacing the rings and using the scope an option? Or should I scrap both and start over with a new 3-9X scope and rings? Was looking at maybe the Vortex Diamondback as an option. Would that be a huge improvement or should I use what's currently on there? The trigger seems nice and since I got the gun for nothing I'm not terribly opposed to upgrading the glass....but money is money. Thanks. Matt

My BIL has a Diamondback on his .30-06, has held zero just fine. For that price range, I'd also consider a Leupold VX-2.
I would be leery of the Barska.

I would definitely upgrade the scope and I would spend as much as you could possibly afford.

I probably wouldn't keep the Barska or the cheap rings.
The Vortex scope you mentioned would be more fine on that rifle, but if you don't want to spend quite that much, I noticed that Cabelas has a SigSauer 3-9x40 scope that normally runs $199.99 on sale for $119.99 (with $5.00 shipping). I've looked through them and they are clear and bright and appear well made. I'd buy one, but I don't need a scope right now.
Regardless of what scope you purchase, spend some money on decent rings. I've had good luck with Warne rings over the years.

If you go with a 3-9x40, you might be able to use low rings, but I always use mediums in that situation, so I'm pretty confident I'll get the clearance I need not only for the scope, but the flip up scope covers from butler creek I always use. The bigger issue you may run into is ring spacing. I've had to replace the two piece mounts with a one piece on some rifles to get the optic where I needed it to be due to eye relief and tube length.

It will depend on the diameter of the lens. A 50mm is going to take mediums; less you may get away with low.

Good call on taking into account the flip up covers. Im planning on using them so I will probably just get medium rings. Also I am installing a one piece mount today.

If you have a 1 inch tube, the height from the top of the receiver to the bottom of the scope tube will need to be .287 (1" tube) for a 40mm objective (assuming no scope cover). This came from brownell's; now you will have some height from the base so you can subtract it from the .287 and that will give you the ring size you need. Lows are .15 so your base would have to be at least .137 tall

Got the base mounted and used a little blue loctite on screw threads for good measure. Looks like the low rings are worth a shot. Gonna be close.

greetings simple solution to ring size. Take your rifle in and buy your scope and rings at the same place and ask the shop owner to stick them on for you. if they dont fit how you like them then ask him to change them there and then. regards Billy
