You Are What You Eat
"Whatever is born of the flesh is flesh, and whatever is born of the Spirit is spirit."
-John 3:6
Have you ever been told, "You are what you eat"? I figure if this statement is true, someday I will turn into a mixture of medium boneless wings from Buffalo Wild Wings and PB&J sandwiches. While I am aware that I will never actually turn into wings or PB&J sandwiches, much truth lies in "you are what you eat." Doctors will tell you to tone down or increase certain foods, because what you eat directly affects how your body functions. Too much salt causes heart problems, not drinking enough water causes dehydration, and thousands of other facts and theories contribute to the development of our bodies.
Did you know this above statement is also true spiritually? Jesus talks about the belongings and development of both flesh and spirit. If we consume more of the flesh, we become more fleshly. If we live in the Holy Spirit, we think and live more in the Spirit. It seems pretty logical. If we exercise, our bodies become stronger and more durable. If we read our Bibles, pray consistently, and serve others regularly, we become more like Christ.
Consumption changes us. Maybe this is what Jesus is referring to when He talks about the flesh being of flesh and the Spirit being of Spirit. When we focus on our own desires that are not of God, our brains are changed and formed to continue to desire these things. When we chase after the things of God, the Holy Spirit comes to point us to Jesus.
Consumption changes us. That is why we need to be careful about what we consume. The Holy Spirit is pushing us to have a relationship with Jesus found in a new life, changed and transformed by the Spirit. Are you consuming things of the flesh or the Spirit? What are some adjustments you could make to both? God wants you in a relationship with him that empowers you to reflect the light of Jesus. I pray that you can reflect being "born of the Spirit" by what you consume day in and day out.
Holy Spirit, point me to a relationship with Jesus found by birth in the Spirit. Help me adjust my consumption of flesh and Spirit so I can reflect your light in the world. Consumption changes me. Empower me to consume what is found in You. In Jesus name, Amen.
