Seems to me there is at least 1 State that makes you take a bear ID test before you can get a license

Supposedly we are starting to get some black bears back in Northeast Texas. I haven't run into one yet but they say some pics have shown up on game cameras. I do know that game and fish have put up signs showing a black bear and a hog and state that you better know the difference.

If the black bear is not native to your state and has not been purposely introduced, is it illegal to kill one?

I don't know for a fact and am NOT trying to start a whizzin contest, but I was told that a person could legally kill a bear or elk in IN and not be criminally charged. Neither are common nor regulated in the state. If I actually saw an elk, I'd watch in awe. If I saw a bear, i'd head home to change my pants.

Bears are regulated as an exotic species. Frim DNR website:
Black bears, once a native species in Indiana, are now listed as an exotic mammal and protected under Indiana Administrative Code 312 9-3-18.5 (b-1), which prohibits the killing of a black bear except by a resident landowner or tenant while the animal is “destroying or causing substantial damage to property owned or leased by the landowner or tenant.”

Now thanks to growing populations in Louisiana and Oklahoma they are slowly coming back. If you kill one your in big trouble.

I was working up in PA a few years ago. I spent a lot in the evenings riding looking for bear because I'd never seen one in the wild. After 5 or 6 potential sighting I finally saw one and there was no question. Big pretty critters

They would both be protected under the exotic species law

Not saying they arn't just saying I could not find it and would like to see law so I know it is so. Thanks I am kind of computer eliterat and could not find the code posted to bring up to read. I just want to read it in its entirety Thanks again
