I watch videos on YouTube about letting your bucks grow and mature but if I'm honest, when I see an 8-pointer I'm like a little kid at Christmas and I want to shoot him so bad! Last year I shot at 2 separate 8-pointers and completely missed both! And I think maybe God caused my arrows to miss because I needed those deer to mature more and to teach me patience! But I think I'll bet others say the same as me: "I'm not shooting anything less than ten points" then when the seasons here and he walks in front of you, your mind changes!!

Shoot whatever makes you happy. With traditional gear I don't worry about how many points it has, I take the opportunities I get. (Excluding fawns)

If I waited on a ten point, I'd still be waiting. I've never seen one when I was hunting.
I shoot what makes me happy, and depending on when and where that could very well be a little ugly.

The beauty of hunting overall is that it is 100% a personal thing....unless you're doing it wrong. Shoot what you will be happy with, and do so legally. Sure the above is impacted by your property goals or personal goals but still doesn't change the fact you do what you are happy with (legally). Personally, I could care less about "points" give me maturity...however sadly I still can't pass a solid 3 1/2 if one walks out sometimes...

I don't worry about number point's but more the age of deer. Been at this game for a long time and now days looking to shoot mature bucks only. To me where I hunt that is 4.5 year olds and older. In my early years I killed plenty of 1.5/2.5 and 3.5 year olds but like the challenge the older bucks present these days. On occasion the more mature/ dominant buck may not have the biggest rack in my area. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder so shoot what makes you happy and don't get caught up in what other people think.

I've always says we should hunt to make only one person happy - ourselves. At the end of the hunt if we are satisfied that is all that matters. I could not care less about the peer pressure to shoot a certain sized animal.

The only deer I won't shoot is one that doesn't present me with a good shot.

IMO, there's nothing wrong with having goals...as long as they are realistic for the areas you hunt and it doesn't keep you from enjoying hunting.

Shoot what makes you happy but don't be crying there's no big Deer if all you shoot are dinks.

I have a friend that is a world-wide big game hunter. He has never shot a buck in Indiana because he hasn't got a chance at one big enough to meet his standards, and he really doesn't care. He was the first one to shake my hand and congratulate me when I killed my big one last year. It is all in what you want and how patient you are. Have fun playing the game.

Having personal goals and standards is perfectly fine. Having a minimum size based on what someone else says you should have is a problem.

My standards seem to change as the season goes on๐ I definitely think that is a factor for most of us out there...and it changes. When I first started out I got less picky as the season waned on...now I've found that into December I'm more likely to let deer walk because the likelihood of a buck making it if still alive is high.
