2017 spring turkey harvest was third highest
Date & Time 5/18/2017 All Day
Description
Indiana hunters harvested more than 13,000 wild turkeys during the 2017 spring wild turkey season, according to the Department of Natural Resources.
This is a 7-percent increase from the 12,081 turkeys taken during the 2016 spring season and the third-highest spring turkey harvest on record.
The youth season was April 22-23. The regular spring turkey season was April 26-May 14.
Weather did not appear to be a limiting factor, despite large amounts of rainfall and flooding.
Annual statewide harvest figures have leveled off since a peak in 2010 of 13,742 turkeys. Recent annual spring harvests have ranged from 11,000 to 12,000 birds.
Additional harvest information will be available with the release of the Spring Turkey Harvest Report, which should be online after Memorial Day.

That has to be "cooked books" with the shear number of bobcats running around destroying the turkey population. ;-)

Not a surprise considering the good hatch and large # birds. Probably a lot of Jake's and a lot of ambushing

I wouldn't be too surprised if the DNR didn't inflate the harvest numbers to help boost license sales. I find those harvest numbers kinda hard to believe. In my neck of the woods predator numbers are up turkey populations are down and the late season opening all had a negative affect on the harvest. Could be it's a local condition but I doubt it.

I'm gonna go way out on a limb and say it's a local condition. It truly is amazing how many people will claim the DNR is putting out artificial numbers when the Statewide report doesn't match their personal experience.

Your certainly entitled to your opinion and yes it was based on local experiences. Maybe turkeys are plentiful where you hunt, not here.

I put people on turkeys from the first day to the last day, 3 counties both private and public land, not bragging just stating facts. Alot of "turkey hunters" leave the woods long before the best action of the day ever happens.

They are out there, if your not enjoying the time even if it means coming home empty handed you ought to try harder and start having fun with it. I have two seasons on my belt both tag soup, I've had days without a peep, and I had days a gobbler 30-40 yds away but too much underbrush and hung up on me without me seeing him. I still had fun and enjoyed the spring woods for a change. I still will committ to next year. Will try different tactics and will Pre scout more even drive an hour in another direction if neccessary. Also Hopefully not get over excited and call too much, as it's frustrating when they stop gobbling after they start pursuing your call.

Didn't realize we had so many DNR fanboys here. Sorry I brought it up. By the way my season wasn't unsuccessful.

Didn't think turkeys could be killed with how late the season is and all Turkeys can be killed any day of the year.

Probably the same people that cheat the system where they work....they think its a trend. Sad!
