As I stated before season my neighborhood was one of the original locations the state planted turkey decades ago and I have enjoyed watching, listening and hunting them for years until this year because there were none to be found.
I searched for weeks and failed to locate any birds till last week when I finally spotted a single tom however the next day when I attempted to hunt him he was gone.
On Saturday morning I get a phone call from a good friend who tells me that there were several strutting toms in a field two fields over from my property and even though I don't have permission to hunt that field I can get real close to that spot.
On Sunday morning I told the wife I was going to go out for just a few hours in the morning and would be home in plenty of time to take her to the Mothers day brunch at the Four Winds casino.
I got set up way before daylight and was shocked at the amount of gobbling that fired up, I heard at least 6-7 birds in all directions including 2-3 that were going at it on...................my place and here I am on my neighbors place with no way to close the gap.
I did have one bird pitch down on the farm that I didn't have permission to hunt on however he never got close enough to have a good killing shot.
I returned home laughing at myself because of the way these birds out foxed me and rubbed it in my face by roosting on my place on the last morning of season.
BUT WAIT! maybe I can set up one last time Sunday evening and maybe they might return to roost on my place again.
At 5:oo pm I set up a single hen in my neighbors field and sat for the last time watching ducks, geese, sandhill cranes, deer, racoon and even a skunk for good measure but no turkeys.
I decided with 45 min left in the season to pack it in and walk up to the house.
BIG MISTAKE......I picked up my decoy unloaded my gun and started walking, I didn't get 25 yards when from around the corner of this tiny patch of woods walks 4 toms about 50 yards away and there I am standing angry at myself for not staying till the fat lady started singing and laughing at myself because once again I was out foxed by a turkey.
Does this make me want to quit turkey hunting? your dam right it does..............until opening day 2018.
