My soon to be 9 year old daughter has decided she wants to try for a turkey this spring. I've got a Rossi 20 gauge single shot, a New England single shot 20, and a Remington 870 20 gauge. What's a good overall shell? I'll limit her to 25 yards or less.

Either one will be fine for 25 yards. Just be sure to have a Turkey choke on the shotguns. For shells use 20 gauge 3" turkey loads with either #5 or #6.

If you can find any, the Federal Heavyweight #7's out of the 870 would probably be good with the right choke. I would think it would be a little heavier than the single shots and have less recoil.

I second the 870 choice..
YOU should play around with loads and let her shoot only a light load until hunt time. Then load up to whatever load you came up with.
Get her a set of shooting sticks too..

20 ga Hevi-shot is deadly. Like I have said before they are expensive but deadly.

She's pretty stout for her age. I'm just afraid the 870 might be a little long for her. As I'm writing this it dawned on me my dad has a youth model. I'm going to get some shells this weekend and get her going. I just wish we had some property with fields, all of ours we have access to is wooded. Might have to try up around Brookville Lake.

Good luck finding the longbeard. Haven't heard a whole lot of good things about them. Most I've been hearing is they prefer a more open choke than the 12 does. Everything I've read guys shooting the heavyweight 7's aren't changing. |

Not to hijack the tread, but Winchester just introduced a .20 gauge SX3 called SX3 Long Beard. Comes choked with a Briley choke: www.fieldandstream.com/turkey-guns-make-your-20-gauge-reach-out-like-12Interesting to build a gun based on a particular shell or at least represent it as such. But considering choke manufacturers are hyping chokes specific to Long Beard XR I guess it shouldn't be surprising. |

I'm shooting longbeards out of my mossberg 500 with a carlson longbeard choke. It's good out to 30 yds. I don't have the money to experiment more so I'm sticking with it for now but will try some hevi shot next year.

Same choke I have and I bought some 3.5" #6s to try out of it as well. The 3" #5s were good out to 40.

Here's my pattern shooting a youth model Mossberg 500 shooting Hevi 13 7s with a pure gold choke at 30 yards. I'm going to use it this year instead of carrying the heavy 12 gauge Benelli Nova around. I killed a bird at 40 yards with this setup.  |

The longbeard 6's had the most consistent pattern out of the four different shells I shot. Shooting out of a 870 youth compact with a Remington super full choke in 20ga. All the rest gave decent patterns but at the range I normally shoot and the cost of the shells, don't think you can go wrong with the longbeard if you can find it. Wasn't impressed with the hevi 13 7's and don't really think the heavyweight 7's have me any more pellets in the circle to justify the almost double cost of the shell. The longbeard will punch a hole under 15 yards and at 30 besides the flyer here and there you are throwing a basketball. Don't shoot any farther since I won't shoot a bird past that. From what I read the longbeard in the 20ga prefers a little more open choke than it does in the 12. Don't think I'll change my setup and actually think I'll buy enough once the season is over to last for several years. You could probably squeeze out a little tighter group with the others but I'm guessing you're going to have to shell out a bit extra for a more custom choke. Don't think you need a whole lot more unless you are doing alot of field hunting.

I never could find any XR in 20 gauge for my son's mossberg. Tried double X and nitros. The nitros grouped very well out to 30 yards which is where I'll limit him anyway.
