Just now heard that some Gander Mt. stores, including Greenfield, are closing. Didn't buy much there, but enjoyed browsing on occasion.

I usually avoid Gander unless I need something now. We do have a family owned outdoor shop close; I'll go there just to support the local shop.
I'm not a bit surprised that they need to close some stores. They capitalized on the Sandy Hook gun rush, but things have slowed a bit. I still enjoy the browsing, but order on line.

Too bad they're not closing the greenwood store. I may actually shop there then.

Good decision they tried a risky move by rapid expansion and it didn't work for them

I was at the store in Merrillville not too long ago and it's no wonder it's closing. It's not very nice at all. It's dingy and looks like an over priced thrift store for sporting goods.

Surprising to hear that I've never seen a poor looking gander? Most aren't even old enough to present poorly yet

I've been in the Merrillville store before and after the renovation a few years back and I agree, the way the isles are laid out it's more like a thrift store layout. I liked the layout better before it was remodeled.

Yep, sure have gone downhill. Way too expensive when you have other stores nearby to compete with. They were their own worst enemy.

I would go to Honey Creek any day of the week over a Gander Mountain.

The first time I was in honey creek I said I'd never go back. I walked in and no one said a single word to me and I walked past multiple employees including the owner. I have been back since then and everything's been good. Gun counter is usually pretty busy but they try to make time to get to everyone as quick as possible. They were the only ones who had the muzzleloader powder I was looking for last year and they held it for me, so that helped get my business back. Must have just been a bad day the first time I was in there.

Gander's are pricey. But they do have a lot to look at. I'll likely check out the Greenfield store sometime this week to see if they are discounting anything of interest.
I don't like to see 'em closing.

To me, Gander is way over priced. Gander took the place of Sportsman's Warehouse, in Lafayette. Used to buy a ton of reloading stuff when it was Sportsman's, but hardly anything from Gander.

The first article I read after Gander filed Bankruptcy was from a Waco, TX newspaper. In the article were some comments from a commercial real estate broker mostly about whether the building Gander occupied (and was closing in Waco) was a viable property to sell. But he made the most interesting comment which echoed what I said in another thread here on the Gander Bankruptcy. Basically, that he never saw many people in the store whenever he went in to shop and could never find a helpful salesperson. A business plan for a disaster......... And then the unbridled expansion and prior to that the sale of their mail order business to Cabela's with a multi year non compete. Someone in management is asleep at the wheel. Probably more than one
