when a good .22 LR can be had for much less. What is the appeal to these high end air guns?? .... I will forewarn anyone who is thinking about getting into "adult" air guns. It is a silly, expensive, and addictive hobby. I just traded my "I'll never part with" customized .25 for a .22 that now wears the same label. At least until I find something more interesting.

For me it's ammo cost. (I like to shoot lots!) And stalking the quarry. Yeah my .457 cost lots of money so did my .25 but one has paid for itself in ammo cost already. A good .22 is what $400-500? My .25 was $550 and I put $200 of mods in it. I've shot 5,000 pellets through it. Do the math on .22 ammo for 5,000 rounds. For the good stuff standard velocity it is twice the cost of premium JSB pellets. My .457 cost $1000. I cast my own and need no powder or lube for the grooves or gas checks. At $100 for 50lbs of lead I make 1,070 340gr slugs. The price of 45/70 same range weight is outrageous. $60 for a box of 20 350gr. www.midwayusa.com/product/536260/grizzly-ammunition-45-70-government-p-350-grain-bonded-core-jacketed-hollow-point-box-of-20Here is a 340gr 45/70 gould bullet after it went through 6 gallons of water into a dirt pile. Plenty of power for large game. Tha support equipment is costly I have a small pony fill bottle and a large 90cf bottle and a compressor. Almost $2000 in those equipments. But it can all be done with a $70-$200 hand pump if you had to.

It is a silly, expensive, and addictive hobby. I just traded my "I'll never part with" customized .25 for a .22 that now wears the same label. At least until I find something more interesting. Several reasons, pure enjoyment of shooting being the main one. I can shoot from my garage to a homemade pellet trap 30 yards out and no one is any the wiser. Although it is legal to shoot where I live, I don't consider my neighborhood to be a proper place to fire off round after round from a powder burner. If its freezing cold out, I can set up a heater in the garage and shoot in comfort. Same thing goes for sweltering heat...I turn on a fan. I have two squirrel hunting spots that I can hunt ONLY because I use an air gun. If you really think about it, can any hobby be financially justified?

I talked to someone at the DNR about this a few years ago, cant find the email now, but they said they had no plans to allow air rifles for big game. My uncle worked for Crosman at the time and had done some engineering work on the .357 Rogue that got me all excited about the possibilities. They certainly are a blast to shoot.

The DNR doesn't have much say. They told me to contact state reps. Which I plan to do.

I have to put a new spring in my FWB 124D, and that will make #3. I can't tell you how many pellets have been through it since the early 1970's (51xx serial). It was an early one from Beeman. I'll have to look at the other one I have to see what that serial number is...

I’ve sent emails to some state reps but have not even got a canned reply back. Maybe I need to walk into the Indiana house of reps and start barking up that tree? Since I first posted Florida and Kentucky have leagalized deer hunting with airguns. I’ve got a vacation planned to Virginia this year and I plan on videoing the hunts to use as fuel to push this further.

Heck, they've legalized every other weapon that comes down the pike in Indiana, may as well allow air guns (with a heavy tone of sarcasm).
You've got three months already and can use; crossbows, compound bows, recurve bows, stick bows, traditional muzzle loaders, in line muzzle loaders, pistols, high-powered pistols, shotguns, suppressors, and centerfire rifles of numerous configurations and calibers. May as well allow hunting with hounds, drone locating, spearing, buckshot and night hunting while were at it too.
Man .... at some point I wish they would just lay off the deer a little bit and start making hunting a little more challenging and not so easy for everyone that comes along with a new idea.

I don’t know....
IMO - A gun is a gun is a gun..,
These requests are usually social requests and does not have anything to do with herd biology. My guess is so few people use them that the DNR and or the NRC will thumb it down.
YMMV...

I still feel like it should be allowed why would the dnr care... it’s not like there are going to be millions of hunters opening morning with 800$ air rifles. Plus going back to the gun control debate... why should any of it be illegal I mean they are just suppressing our rights if they ban it anyway right?

My vote is no we got enough ways to kill deer I have hade enough of new regs new rules with x bows HP rifles and everything else I've had about enough just go hunt. I don't have anything against it but for years a 12 ga worked just fine and you didn't have to worry about regs

I don't have anything against it but for years a 12 ga worked just fine and you didn't have to worry about regs With all due respect, limiting hunting equipment choices to compound bows and 12ga shotguns only isn't going to make our hunting sport too appealing to new generations. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the number of hunters are on a steep decline in this country (I don't know specifically about our state). Now I realize some people may like the prospect of less hunting participation because they think that will be good for them (ie: less competition in the woods). But the issue you are going to encounter with this will be an ever-shrinking segment of the voting population that supports our sport and heritage. I don't know about you, but I can foresee a time in the future where laws could be passed banning all hunting if the downward trend of active hunters continues. Should air guns be legalized? Yes, as long as some minimum projectile energy requirements are set by the DNR. I will even go a step further and say the DNR should consider legalizing air bows, like the Benjamin Pioneer Airbow.

They said crossbows and rifles would never be allowed. So maybe someday this will happen.
