I have owned some real nice ones. Great fit and finish and shoot lights out. Until today. Worked a trade with my local gun shop. My Model 12 (.204) for a new Model 14/114 (.300 Win Mag) with some cash to him. Stock was poor and the barrel was not blued well at all. The bolt would not seat into the receiver without force. The rifle was ugly. Vertical movement of the barrel of at least 1". I have another 14/114 chambered for .243. It is a fine looking and fine shooting rifle. Real disappointed in Savage.

Take it back, or call Savage. There is no excuse for that. They should make it right without question.

I'm sure they would make it right. But it's hard to trust a brand/model of firearms once you've had what I would consider a very bad experience out of them. It's like if you had one of the samsung phones that caught fire well of course they've made thousands of phones without incident but some risk aren't worth taking if they can be avoided. Poor workmanship on a firearm is inexcusable to me. Guns are too dangerous

I hear more people satisfied with Savages out of the box accuracy and satisfaction than any other mass produced gun. They should make it right!

I've never dealt with Savage customer service, but have had very satisfactory experience with their firearms. Sorry to hear that you got a bad one.

I don't read of problems with them on the various sites - hopefully this won't be a sign of future things to come.

I won a Savage Axis .243 in a raffle. Best $20 I ever spent!
I like the little gun, but the scope on it wasn't much so I upgraded to a Nikon 3 X 9 X 40 BDC.
I haven't had a chance to shoot it since the scope upgrade.

I have a few and never had problems

Sorry, but you'll have to ask someone other than me that is a died in the wool rifleman. This prize HPR is the first one I've ever owned...except my Ruger .44 Mag Carbine. With that said IF I had a choice between Ruger and Savage, I probably would have taken the Ruger.

I bought a Ruger 308 this year and at 100 years it was right on target. All within 1". Nice little rifle. I bought a 3 x 6 x 50 scope. Didn't shot a deer this year with it.

I also own a Ruger "Compact Magnum" in .308. Fine accurate rifle have a Leupold 3-9X40m/m scope mounted on it. Have bagged several Deer with it. It's a great woods/brush rifle due to its short 20" barrel, even has factory open sights.
