"I don't know the depth of the WI DNR woes, but I do know as a hunter, former WI resident, and having many friends live in WI, the DNR in WI is doing a horrendous job managing the WI deer herd. No long term planning....deer herd explodes...do nothing until there are so many that you sell permits like chewing gum...no limit, kill as many as you can. Then let that go on so long that by the time you react there are no deer left. It is called wildlife MANAGEMENT for a reason...and WI DNR doesn't do it AT ALL."

Sounds like a model to follow.
I read a comment on the Wisconsin page I'm a part of that their gun harvest was 200,000 down from 500,000 several years ago.
Don't know how true it is' but that is a ton of deer to take during a 9 day firearms season.

I know a number of years back (4-5), WI.DNR misestimated the number of bear in Wisconsin by 50%!!!! I have never seen so many bear as when I would go there to run bear with my dogs.

Wisconsin is one of three states that have harvested more that 500,000 deer in a season. They kill more deer in Wisconsin even in the down years than the total estimated Indiana deer herd. Their gun season starts the Saturday before Thanksgiving so the rut usually is not a factor.

I don't know what to think about this, but they sure do have contrast of land in that state. I'd sure like to take a hunt up in the north part.

At least not deer hunting if you wanted to see a deer. The population is way down up there, and since there are no agricultural fields, it's completely different than hunting here. There were 5 of us this year, hunting a 1700 acre piece of property. Opening morning was upper 20's, sideways snow and 30-40 mph winds. I stayed in the house and shot a small forkhorn, (the house is on a strip of land between 2 lakes - classic funnel area) and the other 4 never saw a buck in 4 days of hunting. |

Wow, I've heard the wolves were bad up there. How far up north did you go? The place I'm looking at is up by lake Superior. It's partly the 4 legged predators, both wolves and bears, combined with low deer numbers because of the habitat and throw in a few bad winters (think of snow 24"-36" deep starting the week before Thanksgiving) and you have your answer. Google Presque Isle, Wisconsin. Look 2 miles South of there, and that is where we hunt. The UP of Michigan is literally walking distance from where we hunt. |
