I'm considering a lab because I am interested in waterfowl hunting so I have some questions. Are males or females easier to train? Which sex has a higher drive for retrieving? Does neutering or spaying affect their trainability and their drive for retrieving?

Everyone has a opinion and it just that, a opinion.
My opinion. Females are easier to train. Males have more drive and desire. As for spayed idk. I leave them all intact. You might want a pup later.

Female for trainability. Spaying/neutering hasn't ever negatively affected any I have seen.

fixed dogs still work great.
most labs are very trainable. start with obedience. sit, heal and down the rest is easy.

From what I've read don't play mindless fetch with it and don't let others play mindless fetch with it. If it's going to be a retriever make retrieving it's job. Playing fetch is ok but make sure it follows the rules still.

5 generations of female labs has taught me that if you treat the dog with love and understanding (heavy on the understanding) it will love you back and hunt it's heart out for you.
Picking the right pup is a crap shoot,spading is personal choice, I do it as soon as possible.
Enjoy the puppy for several months let the puppy be a puppy before you start your training except for basic commands and house training.
Make the dog a house family pet as well as your hunting companion.
And most of all never loose your temper if that starts to happen just walk away and start fresh tomorrow.
