Went out to Glendale to run this morning only because I thought I'd like to try to take a pheasant. Checked in and parked at a spot I ran before not expecting a whole bunch. Dropped the dogs down and walked a bit into the brush. Seen something moving had a bit of white on it. Figured no way it's a rooster already. My blue pup came over by me and took off running and up exploded a rooster. It took two shots but I dropped him. Put him in the game vest and off we went. Dogs jumped a rabbit right off the bat and ran it pretty well. As they were coming back out squirted another rabbit. Didn't shoot at either of them, just let them run. After the third circle finally decided to shot it. Put them on the one I seen hopping out the side and they were off to the races. Let them run that one until they lost it. Moved to another field and they jumped another immediately. Circled that one good and he ran into a log pile. I ran around the backside to make sure they didn't cross the road chasing him but that ol rabbit stuck in that brush pile. At one point all five dogs were in the brush pile with him. Suppose pressure got to him and he came flying out with a dog nipping at his tail. Put too much pressure on that one and he holed up. Dogs came back and immediately jumped another but he made a beeline for the same hole. Moved again and jumped a hen but missed her. Had 5 more bunnies out of that field but only decided to take one. One of the bunnies ended up under a pile of boats put up for the season and them dogs were doing all they could to get under it but just couldn't. All in all a good day. Two pheasant up and I think ended the day with 9 bunnies jumped. Gutting one of the rabbits I pulled the biggest tape worm I've ever seen out of the intestines. Nasty sucker.

I know Glendale does the put and take pheasant release and I thought that this year they were releasing only cock birds so only cock birds could be taken during the mop up hunts.

I know Glendale does the put and take pheasant release and I thought that this year they were releasing only cock birds so only cock birds could be taken during the mop up hunts. Nope, they released both. They are telling you to shoot everything. Heck last year when the "season" was in I asked about it because it's only cock birds during season. Guy told me, shoot everything. DNR on the property doesn't care since theyll all die anyway. Didn't try to push the issue. Seen a bunch of predator killed birds today. Shame that they don't last. I know last year towards the end of the season they were telling me that during the put and take and clean up they didn't even reach 50% take. They even told me where they had been seeing a bunch of roosters. Spent three days trying to kill one certain rooster but could never get him out of a dozer pile.

It is my understanding that the reason they are releasing only roosters is because local property owners to some of the DNR properties complained that when they allow hunters to shoot hens they are possibly shooting native wild hens and because of this the pheasant population can't grow. Last year marked the first year that Winamac released roosters only and also they would not allow put and take hunters to shoot any other kind of game because for that week of put and take release the hunting pressure was hard on native animals such as rabbits squirrel and quail. I was under the impression that all put/take state properties went cock birds only during and after the release.

I was under the impression that all put/take state properties went cock birds only during and after the release. Unless I was misinformed, they released both, at least there. It was obvious as I found quite a few dead hens that were caught and eaten by something or another. Might have been a property to property decision as to what to release. It would make sense that properties closer to natural birds would do so but doubt 1 out of 1000 make it through the winter down there.

You are correct it was certain properties that released roosters only. As far as I can tell hens fly, die, and taste the same as roosters.

Day two, drove all the way to running ground and had to turn around and come home. Battery was dead in my handheld for my tracking collars.
Today went out and struggled to jump one. Dont know what was wrong with conditions but even my tighter mouth dogs were popping off quite a bit. Did manage to jump one and they ran it for a good 45 minutes but traffic started picking up and the rabbit kept running up towards the road. Caught him once trying to cross and chased him back. Wasn't worth dogs crossing the road. Wasn't the prettiest of running but they moved it out. Figured that was enough for the day since I didn't feel like walking farther away from the road.

Gave it two hours effort today. Didn't jump a single rabbit in one of my best spots. Stupid cold out. Hunted a 20 acre property and I swear we walked every inch of it. They were either sitting tighter than I've ever seen a rabbit sit or they went underground. Lots of holes where I was hunting so I'm guessing underground. Took my oldest and my youngest. Thinking the pup is depending too much on my best dog. Took the older dog because I knew if they jumped one, the pup would blow him away. The best laid plans...

Well took a trip to Glendale today and met jimstc. Great guy. Told him not to expect much and didn't disappoint. Conditions flat sucked. We got several up but not a whole lot of running. Like meeting an old friend. Did more taking than hunting. At one point the dogs jumped a rabbit and ran it maybe for ten minutes, no idea because we were talking and payed zero attention to what the dogs were doing. Man but it was cold out. Temps weren't that bad but the wind didn't make it fun. He only had a couple of hours to run as he had prior appointment but you have to respect a guy that drives two and a half hour on 12 hours notice to run dogs three hours and put zero effort into killing anything. Seems we are both at the point in our hunting career where we neither need or quite honestly want to kill much. I'll let him explain how he planned on shooting rabbits with a scoped shotgun. Jim, you are invited any time you want to go, you have my number. Give me a call when you get time and I'll make it happen. Anyone ever get a chance to hunt with him, jump at it. He also did make another new friend, one that just wouldn't shut up.

Hunted the same spot three days ago and got 6 up and running. Ground is just frozen, doesn't leave much scent and they are sitting TIGHT. Dogs jumped one by the truck that we seen. That rabbit didn't leave the nest until that dog stuck his head in the grass pile. I will agree for the most part it gets hammered and everyone has to shoot every rabbit they see but seen more rabbits there this year then ever. Of course deer is still in and when that ends the guys that just run a month or two a year will be pulling the dogs out.

I hunted it a couple years ago, with out dogs, and it was cold like this and snow covered, AFTER deer season. It was hard to find a spot in the snow that hadn't been trampled. I think I killed one or two rabbits.

He also did make another new friend, one that just wouldn't shut up. Yes the dreaded scoped shotgun. Pretty funny. After I decided to go I picked up my cased Rem V3 and put it by the door. I forgot that I had put a scope on it when my son in law borrowed it for our hunt at Big Oaks. Remembered the scope about half way. Oh @#$%! Got to the exit off I 69 and saw a cabinet shop. Went in and asked if they had any torx wrenches. Told me they were hunters too and got my scope off. Great guys and we had a good laugh. Really, really enjoyed my time today. Span has some very impressive dogs. Looking forward to hunting with him again. Next time I'll shut up and listen to the dogs! Thanks for the time Shane. I hate to admit it but I mentioned to my wife when I got home that I enjoyed it more than deer hunting.

But I wouldn't know I've never done it. That last statement is pretty close to how I feel.

I have no idea what you are talking about! And yes, hunting priorities are subject to change Like I told you when you left, go on and start building your kennels. Sit in a tree all day hoping maybe to see a deer and get up at 0' dark 30 or get up, mess around, have some breakfast, get started when you get started. No comparison. Hunted about an hour after you left. Didn't do any better but the lemon pup cut his nose and now has zero hair around his mouth from bumping the frozen ground. He never quit hunting. That sight chase at the start must have flipped another switch. He's going to be a good one. Appreciate the compliment on the dogs.

They have no quit. Not at all surprised about the lemon pup. He is highly motivated and very well trained. He is a keeper. Heck, all five I saw today are. Again, not surprised. It was a treat to hunt with them and watch them work
