Well what can I say if it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all. I took my vacation time November 4 - 14 this year. From some of TNT previous posts you may have been able to tell that I was having a rough go due to standing corn and the weather kinda sucked. I made the decision mid week to hang a stand in a 40 acre chunk of woods that has been a dedicated sanctuary for 3 years (I've literally not stepped foot in it during that time) but the farmer cut a row right next to it. Entry would be a breeze as it's only 50 yards off of the road and extends further into the farm and is at most 80 yards wide. Anyhow let's just say I found a good spot as the action picked up. My downfall is that my successes at chasing big bucks has made me a little picky at this stage. On the Friday before gun season I was at the end of an all day sit when I got my shot at a bruiser. It was a heart shot for sure and he bolted from the way he came. This is the bad luck part.... a freaking truck hit the deer as it apparently made its furious death run.
I "heard" it all go down so I made my way to the roadway in a hurry. Priority one was is everyone ok... they were. Priority two getting my deer... I was unsuccessful. The guy had an older truck so after asking if I could have the deer and showing him that I had in fact shot it I offered to fix the damage followed by me attempting to buy the truck outright.
I called Winamac fish and wildlife main office as they are close by and I know their is usually DNR in the area to see if I had any options. Nope I didn't.... Goodbye deer
So I've packed up my toys since then and had to take a break for a bit. I'm going to head out for muzzleloader I guess and see what happens.
Apologies for the long story but I've been told I just need to smile about it.... I'm trying to smile 👍

Tough luck my brother, I'm a firm believer that you will score a nice buck in muzzler loader. There's not much competition, most hunters have packed it in, the colder weather keeps the deer moving and the big old deer are on the move looking for love. Killed and seen some of the biggest deer during December, hang in there and tag a nice one.

Not sure that because someone hit a deer they get to take. Thought you had to call police to scene if property damage accident as well. Hhmmm not sure about this.

I appreciate it.. no I didn't get a picture. I believe I was so caught up in the moment and trying to fix it I didn't think to preserve it. Probably a good thing as it would've opened up the wound each time I took a look I believe.

After the fact and time to think about it I'm sure that he legally needed to contact law enforcement to properly tag the deer. However a cop buddy of mine did assure me that the deer would've legally been his to take possession of as the deer was dead in the road. Had the deer been knocked back onto the property I would've had the right to claim it. Coulda, shoulda, woulda I guess

Sorry bout the lost buck but dang man..I can't imagine walking away from that situation without some form of law being involved. No way I would have just lost an argument over it and walked. Hope you get another opportunity.

Man that is a tough one to swallow. I once stopped to look at a roadkill buck along I69. Upon further review, someone had made a good kill shot. It just so happened to make it out on the highway and get hit. Since then, I have wondered how often this actually happens.

You may not at the time it happens.... All depends on how you handle the situation. But you dang sure just don't turn your cheek and move on.... Report it!!! I am sure the truck had a plate # and so on.

Call the police and wait for police. Tell your story and see what happens. If deer had a gun shot a round in vital area I would dare to say you would have probably gotten deer. Seems very odd to me that you offered to pay for damages and he opted to keep deer instead??? Doesn't make sense to me. Oh,well it's already over.

I'd have sat down on the deer and called the police.

Just crossed my mind when I read it.. I've put a couple down in the last year that weren't mine, but I also took them home.

But, it did look like a 3 blade fixed broad head to me. Quite possible though.

I am almost positive I had a nice buck stolen from me one year. Not sure what I would do in your situation but it would probably get ugly.

Apologies for the long story but I've been told I just need to smile about it.... I'm trying to smile 👍 I had something close to this happen several years ago. I had been hunting a very nice buck in bow season. Was close several times but no luck. On the last morning of archery season he came down a power line. Stopped 60 yards or so way. Then broke out of the power line and made a mad dash across a corn field to a small strip of woods next to highway. A few minutes later I hear a car hard on brakes and a loud bang. Sick at my stomach I get down and make the walk. When I walked up to my truck and the road. There 50 yards from my truck was a buck of my lifetime. Then it gets good. The lady goes nuts on me, screaming it's my fault and I destroyed her car, and the buck wouldn't have been running if I hadn't been chasing it. This woman was off the dial. So just then a officer pulls up. She goes nuts on him also that it was my fault and I had to pay for her car. Well I asked officer later on if I could have deer and he asked her first. Well answer was NO. Found out later from a friend of a friend that the lady found out that the rack was worth a little cash and sold it.

I have a cousin that had this happen to him about 20 years ago. He narrowed a buck and it ran about 200 to 300 yds onto I-65 and was hit by a semi. At the time it was the largest buck he had arrowed and ended up being a 140 inch 9 pt. The buck ended up on the side of the road closest to his hunting property and was absolutely mangled. He walked up in full camo with his face mask still on and cut the head off with his knife. He said he never said a word to the driver and the guy just looked on in shock. By this time it was almost dark and he walked off back in the woods.
Obviously this is not the way it should be handled and he now knows that but it was back in his younger and dumber days. He did contact a CO the next day and told him the story. He believes the CO just thought the story was so unbelievable that he just told him to contact the proper authorities next time that happened. It's funny to me that the CO actually thought that would happen again.
