Fresh off my 2016 "Rutcation" on our property in Ohio County I am left still scratching my head. This has been a very disappointing and confusing season on our property. It started in early September when all of our more mature bucks started to disappear from my cameras. It continued into the hunting season when after hunting a total of 17 days I still have not seen a mature buck or even a buck over 120 inches. The guy who owns property next to mine is having the same kind of experience on his place as well. He called me last night and said some of the other guys in our immediate area are not seeing any mature buck movement either in person or on Camera.
My first thought was maybe we had an isolated EHD breakout but none of us have found any dead deer over the past couple months. So I am not sure what is really going on here but it sure is disappointing to say the least. I guess I will just have to see how things shake out once the rut and gun season are over. Hopefully late December is better to me then October and December have been.

I think it has to be the weather. Pulled cards from 2 cameras yesterday. Had multiple pics of 2 shooers all in the darkness. With the hot weather and the bright moon there is no reason to show themselves right now. Only a matter of time though.

What is the terrain and habitat make up of the property and surrounding?

Bucks disperse from summer range. And its a week or so from really frantic seeking phase imo

I've had a similar season so far Henson. Sightings are way down this year compared to most. I'm blaming it on warm daytime temps and a bright moon. Hopefully next weekend will lead to more activity in our areas.

What is the terrain and habitat make up of the property and surrounding? Being from central IL the terrain might as well be mountains LOL. Its really hilly with lots of ridges and deep valleys.

Stay positive as the season can change in the blink of an eye my friend. You got a great LOCATION to hunt and I am sure there are some shooter's lurking nearby.

I've seen two quality deer both around noon time so far this year. Both trotting fast through the fields and woods. Look like moving from one spot to another in quick order. 10am to 2pm is the best time to hunt mature bucks. I like 10am to 1pm.

This time of year you are likely to see a buck running across the Walmart parking lot if you just sit there long enough.

This time of year you are likely to see a buck running across the Walmart parking lot if you just sit there long enough. You got that right! I had an 8 pt almost run over me the other night while I was standing in my mom's driveway talking on my phone. Sunday there was a giant buck a couple miles from my house in the middle of the day with a doe standing in the middle of a field nowhere close to a woods. At least that is what everyone that drove by him posted on Facebook.
