Full disclosure: As a life-long Indiana public land deer hunter I have never had the need nor the desire to learn about HPR's. I know just a little bit more than nothing about them.
1. Why is the 25-06 not legal to hunt with? My buddy has one and can't figure out the logic. I am going off his claim that it is not legal. 2. What is the realistic range of the .243 caliber?
I don't need 100 answers, opinions, etc. Just the facts.
Thanks in advance.

1) .25/06 Wasn't one of the calibers proposed by lawmakers for inclusion into the HPR rule. 2) With a quality bullet, probably 200-250 yards max. A varmint-type bullet will not perform well on deer at any range.

A .243 will have about a 10 inch drop at 300yards and 24" at 400yards. So it you have a good scope you can get out to about 300 yards.

If I were using a 243 and working up my own loads I would think that 300 would be the maximum range I would trust it on deer sized game.
Like said above, the 25-06 was not one of the calibers proposed. Why is anyones guess.

I agree with 300yd max. With a 200yd zero JDUB's load drops a smidge over 7.5" at 300.

I agree with others...me personally I don't like shooting beyond 200 yards...but would cap if practiced at 300 yards from a rested position.

If on public though it isn't legal either though.
