Hello poc, It's always nice to see guys post who don't very often. Welcome! What kind of dog do you want? Been thinking about a beagle for a year or so. But now thinking of something to track wounded deer. But I'm finding a beagle can be used for that too, so maybe still a beagle. get ahold of span870 on here he is down that way and can help you get ahold of a dog

Hopefully I'll get to meet him this year.

Dan's briarproof bibs. You'll pay for them but they'll last a lifetime. You can buy once or buy several times.

I really enjoy rabbit hunting after I've filled the freezer with deer. That said, I'm tired of ripping my bibs on briars. Been wanting to get some Filson chaps. Just looking to start a central thread that I can look back on and purchase as I go. Ideas, gear, must have, don't need...and go! How deep you want to get into it? All you need is a gun and shells, everything else is a want. You can kick brush or buy a $3000 dog. It can be the cheapest hunting you can do or run you into 5 figures. Buddy says, you want to be a millionaire with hound dogs then you best start with a billion dollars. You want to fill the freezer or listen to dogs. Past time or passion. If it's not something you'll do all year then dogs are not a good idea. You can't pen them up for 10 months and expect anything but a headache. If it's something you just want to do every once in a while, find a friend with dogs and tag along.

If you want a dog, run a bunch of dogs. A beagle ain't a beagle. There are so many different styles and speeds. You want a run to catch upper speed or a run the scent between the legs pleasure dog? Slow or fast. Single or pack. Too many people buy a dog and think that all are the same. Couldn't be farther from truth. Also have to look into what your buddies run if you plan on running together. If I run large pack ukc dogs and you have a brace style dog, we aren't going to have much fun together and your dog's going to get blown up. 15" or 13"? Male or female. Pup or started or finished dog. The more thats been done with it the price goes up. You absolutely will not get a finished dog with no faults for $200, just not out there. Don't just go to ol Joe smith down the road that has a beagles for sale sign out front for a hunting dog. You'll have no idea what you are getting and you're going to end up disappointed. Not saying you have to go akc but at least you know what to expect. If you know someone that has dogs and has generations of them in their kennel then that's a whole different ballgame.
I can talk about this all day. I'm sure most don't want to read. If got want you can message me if you want to talk more.

My favorite hunting dogs are my buddies. e it beagles, labs or gsp...I love them and respect the styles. But I don't have to train, feed, house, clean up after or lose them. If a dog has a bad day it does not ruin my time, usually as I have not put in the efforts to train or really have high expectations of them. I generally just love being out there. I do have a minor bug for a pointer of some type...but I will resist.
