A lot of you have probably seen my posts on FB by now but finally got a chance to get it uploaded to share here.
Yesterday afternoon we hunted some public ground near us. Found this spot the day before bow season and we first hunted it this past weekend. I didn't have a tree stand in the area so we made a ground blind out of the natural stuff around us.
The first evening we had a couple does and 1 of the small bucks from our camera show up but they never offered a shot. Tried again the next evening and blanked.
Her schedule freed up yesterday so I picked her up from school and we headed straight for the property. Really thought the weather change would have them moving early but we didn't see anything until about 5 minutes before sunset. I looked off to our right and saw a rack in a thicket coming our way. He raked a tree before starting to feed our way, taking a step every few seconds. Before cleared the last of the cover I told her to go ahead and draw. She was already positioned on her stool in the blind and drew back on him and got settled. As he took his next couple steps I talked to her like I always try to. Going through the checklist with her to get her head right and makes sure everything is good to go. After Yes answers to everything I told her to take a deep breath and take the shot if you're ready.
At the shot there was an instant that I thought she missed, then THUMP, he mule kicked and was gone. I just kinda sat there in disbelief while she started to come unraveled. Bow hunting tears her up just like her daddy and I love it!
We waited 30minutes in the blind, in the dark, talking about everything that just happened and letting her know the plan.
I was unable to find any sign in the dark around the shot so we backed out and headed home. Being a school night, she ended up going to be and after waiting about 3 hrs I went back to see what I could find. After 30 minutes or so of looking around the place he stood and the direction he went, I got back in the blind to mark the last spot again. Before long I found first blood and to make at least this part of the story short, I found him within 75yds. Turns out she liver shot him and we made the right call to back out when we did.
We thought he was a 6pt from the encounters but he's basically a forky with a busted brow on 1 side and a front eye guard off the other base.
Couldn't be more proud of that kid.
The bear bow shooting 40lbs and 85gr Montecs nearly passed through, only hanging by the fetching on the off side. Very pleased with this youth bow that she's had for several years now and still has room to adjust.
