Rats do indeed dig tunnels. We used to have rat killings at our buddies turkey barn and there were rat tunnels everywhere. but the good news is weasels will eat rats

I believe that a weasel will kill anything that doesn't kill them first. Blood thirsty little critters.

I think the rat was the culprit after all, last night I found the missing duckling,it was still in the pen, over in the shadowy corner with it's head and neck pulled down the rat's hole. The way it's back and dirt blend together it looked like a hump of dirt. There hasn't been anymore disturbance since I caught it but I'm going to wait awhile and see if I catch anymore before I put them back down there though. I want them to be bigger too, that should help.

I would think a Pit Bull would make a better pet.

I would think a Pit Bull would make a better pet. I doubt it I figured since I've already got 2 dogs,1 cat,3 cockatiels and a pond that it would be nice to something for the pond that doesn't want to rip my leg off

Please do keep us posted on how your efforts to protect the ducklings go. Most of the time predators would get to most of the ducklings before they grew up. A mother duck would swim by with ten ducklings, and every time you saw her again there would be fewer and fewer. Maybe two would survive to the point that they were big enough not to be cute anymore. I guess that's just the Circle of Life. I like to think that everyone just wants to stop and admire ducklings and watch them go by. There is an old episode of "The Simpsons" where adorable ducklings crossing the road is a plot point, and when I was a kid, my teacher read us a book called "Make Way for Ducklings." But for most creatures, ducklings are breakfast. I guess it's just the Circle of Life.

Well I thought since there hasn't been anymore signs down there that maybe that 1 rat was all there was, knowing that usually that's not the case, this morning 2 of the holes were dug out again. So,I know it's not safe yet. Looks like I might need to find another place for them for awhile, they're getting too big for that tote, might have to borrow the dog's cage for a few weeks .
