Heard from a member on here that dachshunds are awesome trackers? I have 2 now and am hoping to shoot a deer so I can give my male a shot and see if he can find it! I know there's alot of dogs that are capable of it just checking to see if anyone uses dachshunds specifically

Well thank you very much! N falls posted them for me. And believe me i wasn't much for them eithier really until I got my wife the red male! And he turned out to be most loyal fishing buddy! Love the little guy to death and he loves fishing bass tournaments with me! And let me tell you I have a pitbull also and he is way more game than she is! So long story short my wife kind of took my pitbull over also so I said I'm getting me a dog so I've got me another little fishing buddy. And hopefully I can teach her how to blood trail also! She's only 6 weeks old though so I'm going to try my male out this year if I get lucky enough to shoot one!

My parents have one and I've always said if I have issues tracking a deer I want to bring her to try it out. She's a long haired one, but should still do the job.

I've had and been around alot of dogs but I'd have to say there some of the coolest little dogs ever! They all have their own personality. And it's definitely bigger than they are....

The 1 we had would chase squirrels and rabbits but living in town we didn't have much of a chance of seeing deer, don't know if she would've tracked it or not.

Have seen some on YouTube before tracking. Start doing some deer urine drags in the backyard with a wic see if he picks up the track wear your rubberboots so he isn't following your scent. You could use deer meat if you have any an drop some along the trail.

Several years ago, we called in a tracker with a dachshund to track a deer my son shot. It was amazing to see that dog work. Not long after, we got a dachshund (from whitetaildave24's Mom). We didn't get her with the intention of making her a tracking dog, but did start working with her soon after we got her to see if she could do it and to have a little fun.
Although we've never had her track an actual wounded deer, she is a tracking machine. We save some deer liver every year, cut it up into chunks, and freeze it. When we want to work with her, we thaw it out, tie some fishing line to a chunk, and drag it. We've put down some pretty tough trails, zig-zagging thru the woods, thru an open field, back into the woods, thru thick brush....she always follows the trail and finds the chunk of liver at the end. We've laid tracks well over 1/4 mile long while doing this. I would not hesitate to put her on a deer trail.
She is the first dachshund we've ever had, but will not be the last. She has tons of personality and is just a great family pet. We've got other dogs (English Setter & German Shorthair), but she rules the household.
