Ill start off by saying, sorry for making yall wait! Been a long but very satisfying day to say the least!
Yesterday i had posted in the "live from the stand" section that the wife and i were going in late this morning, but the wife had the day off and i had a little time to spare in the morning, so we were going to hit it late or not.
Fast forward to this morning 9/4/16. We couldnt go anywhere til our youngins got on the bus for school. Which was the reason for us "going in late". Bus comes at 7 on the dot every morning. We get up, get the kids rolling, all the while trying to make sure we are ready to, so we can leave asap. Well as usual things didnt go as planned and we werent as ready as we wanted to be, so we ended up leaving closer to 730, 15 minute drive to the woods, another 20 getting ready and to the stand. That puts us on stand ready to go at 8.
Sun was up already, i hate going in late but we had no choice. She works alot, hardly gets to hunt but has the passion for hunting like us all. We bought her a new mathews 2 seasons ago. She shoots and shoots and shoots, only to hunt no more than 5 times a year. As always she was ready to go this year to.
Back to hunt, daylight was already upon us, woods was coming to life. This particular woods, we have 2 ladder stands set up that we never hunt, honestly never. We both have climbers and always sit side by side, she feels safer that way. Today again was different, going in late, i suggested lets sit these ladder stands, quiter and quicker. First time we've ever sit more than 15yrds apart. We were closer to 100 today.
The standa are in very good areas. The one i sit has to heavily used trails on each side, i was content were id be. The stand i sit her in, has 2 white oaks thats just dumbed acorns this year. Also happens to be were 2 fence rows meet, with a small opening, maybe 20yrds wide, that opens up into a standing corn field. I could tell by the tracks in the field mud that they were hanmering that area pretty good.
The hunt, her stand was further than mine so i walk her to hers, make sure she was good to go on her harness, wait til she climbs up and i back track to my stand. I climb up, get situated myself and send her a text to make sure shes all set. I get a response she was good. A couple minutes pass, she texts me again, saying she feels like the world can see her in the stand. I reassure her and tell her to just keep all movements to a minimum and move slow if she did move. She didnt respond.....several minutes pass, not like her. My phone rings, its her, shes crying historically, saying she just shot one. I calm her down lol...tell her to text me how it all went down so i can get a feel of how good the shot was, so on and so forth. She was being loud which is why i wanted her to text!
She says she hit right behind the shoulder, he ran off with the arrow sticking out. He was quarting away to her left (i didnt find this out til later). So a hit behind shoulder with arrow sticking out, had me thinking she hit off shoulder and thats a dead deer. I told her the samething. I told her to sit still, and i would be down to her in a few. I wanted a good 30 minutes before i headed her way.
She gets down and is beyond herself! In a good way!
Once she shows me were he was, i realized the quarting away, and doubled checked on where she saw it hit. She insisted right behind the shoulder. I was hoping it wasnt to far forward.
We find blood right away. Followed in thru the standing corn, back into the woods, back into the corn, this went on for longer than i liked. A couple hundred yards in, the blood wasnt as heavy as it started out as. We find her arrow, it had backed out. From the looks she got a good 8 inches that i could tell of penetration. At that point I wanted to back out, she didnt! Lol i tried to explain how important it was that we did, she has nothing to say, just looking ahead for her buck to be down.
She grabs me by the arm rather hard, and in a loud whisper says "there he is". He had bedded down directly in front of us, no more than 40 yrds. He was still alive and wasn't moving even though he was looking right at us. He was hurt for sure, and if we would have backed out im sure he would have expired right were he lay. I had my crossbow, i told her to ease another 10yrds closer and put another in him if she could. I new he could jump up and take off to never be found again, or she was going to end right there. He didnt move, she steaded and put another arrow in him. Thats all it took.
Now the drag out! Close to 500yrds from the truck, and no access thru the fields due to standing crops. Luckily he was headed for the creek/crick that runs thru and didnt make it. He was 10yrds from it. Up the stream we went, down the middle. It was easier in the deep water to pull him along! We get up to the truck, get him gutted. I examine exactly what damage her first shot had made. At that quarting away angle and her hitting right behind the shoulder, which was the right thinking kinda lol, she had just caught one lung. I explained the shoot to her, she understands for sure. A couple inches further back and that track job and drag out is alot easier!
One proud husband, shes been on cloud 9 all day! Words cant explain!
I told her hes far from the biggest deer in the woods, and he may not be to her, but to me hes my trophy of a life time. He will be at the taxy later this week. He will hang proudly among the others i have on wall!
Now to pictures! I have one to share but its been awhile that ive posted one. Either someone explain or i can email it to someone and they can add it for me!
Sorry for the long read fellas, but its been a good day!
