I was just looking up the rules for the fall turkey season online. I saw 35 Turkeys Sunday Morning and many where Tom's.
As I did some research I found that gun season will be allowed Oct. 18 or 19 through the 23rd.
With this being the first days of bucks starting to roam and marking their territory I was wondering your thoughts on guns popping off during archery season.
How many say if the fall season continues move the gun to the first week of Oct.
How many just don't care?
How many say leave it like it is?
Just looking for bowhunters opinions. Not trying to start a turkey vs. deer war.

I might be wrong on this, but I think my county (Morgan) is a bow only county for Turkey with no fall gun season........... and I sure don't understand that. Morgan is FULL of Turkey! I see them by the bookoos every year in the fall!

The reason it is set like it is .... is to give archery hunters first crack at em. Not too sure if I understand....are you saying that you would perfer that the gunhunters go first?
The DNR has not done a very good job of publicizing the new turkey season....I have spoke with several folks who didn't even know they were "in season".
License retailers should have been encouraged to "suggestive sell" when folks were buying their archery tags...."would you like a fall turkey tag too"?

No I don't think firearms should be first! But when gun season is in, you should be able to take one with your gun............ I just don't think that is the case (or not for my county anyway)?!? From the way I took it, in Morgan Co you could ONLY take one with a BOW?!? Maybe I mistook the info!

I actually like the idea of a late Oct. fall gun season for Turkey.
As long as I hunt private property that does not allow guns for any reason I feel the bucks will be more comfortable coming to my area to bed in the mornings.
I was talking this over with a neighbor and he said he couldn't wait until fall turkey season for shotgun. It just got me thinking about how many people would be spooking bucks as they roam the woods marking their scrapes in the morning or going to bed.

Lest we forget , there have been guns going off during EA since the beginning . Squirrel season begins in mid August , and the majority of the squirrel hunters I know use shotguns until the leaves are down , and .22s after that . Anybody want to tell them that they can't hunt their own season as they have for decades before archery hunting even began ? If having guns going off during the pre rut was gonna spook the bucks it would have done so already and none of us would ever see one .

Kevin,
Most squirrel hunters I know don't use a 12 gauge, they use a 410 or 20 gauge at best if they use a shot gun. We have always used .22's starting in Sept. but I do open my season with a 20 guage wingmaster. I never have hunted with a shotgun for squirrels during deer season.
When the ruts on you will still see bucks, everyone knows when the rut hits all bets are off. I am asking if you think it will have an affect on bedding areas for bucks and their "home territory" just before the rut.
I take it you don't think it will change anything in your neck of the woods. In mine I think it will. Because by late Oct. most squirrel hunters have lost the fire to head out at dawn. While in Switzerland county we will see a LARGE increase in fall turkey hunters is my bet.

I don't think deer pay all that much attention to a BOOM. What bothers them is people in the woods.

It will be interesting to see what the results will be.
I don't think it will have much of an impact. Certainly not near what opening day of firearms has, and we still see and kill big bucks after opening weekend.

Most people around here alway use 22s for squirrels and quit hunting them by the end of Oct.I've watched deer (does) while someone shot, and unless the shot was real close to them, all they did was look that way and go back to what they were doing. One time I was target shooting in the field by the woods I hunt in.I was using my T/C pistol with the 35 Rem barrel on it and that thing is real loud. There were some does over by the woods a couple hundred yards away eating and they just stood there and watched me.

I hunt down south near Switzerland for turkey in the spring. I don't tend to hear that many gun shots then. I don't see it making a difference unless the turkey hunter is very close to you.

IMO the gun season is too short to make any difference to bowhunters.
