Can anyone tell me if the persimmons have started dropping in Orange County? Me and the wife had planned on going down to our place this weekend for them, but weather looks bad and I've got some other things I could be doing.
Just wondered if it was worth the trip.
Thanks.

I usually wouldn't even think about trying gather any until there's been a good frost no matter where you're going?? Even the "improved" variety I have planted in my yard (that doesn't need to have cold temps to mature) isn't ready yet.

I did not know that persimmons grow in Indiana. I recently moved here from Tennessee where they are everywhere. You have to arm wrestle the deer and squirrels for them........robin

My trees are in my yard and are seedless I keep them picked up pretty good so no critters will get them. I am sure a few are eaten. Last year I got 450 bags of pulp out of them with 2 cups per bag.

If you have seedless persimmon fruit then you do not have native trees (or varieties there of).
Swetz-are the persimmon trees you want to harvest fruit from native or did you plant "oriental" varieties??

I am in lawrence county and i have not seen any to speak of. there are a few that make a mess on the road every year and i have not seen the mess yet.
Squirrels did a number on my trees in late july early august. First I had seen them hit the fruit so hard too. I will check it out later and see what is left

Ryan, you must just have bad trees. Ours are covering the yard and mom's are dropping too. Neighbors down the street has that many dropping that the road is orange. Reckon it just depends on the trees. Speaking of persimmons, getting excited to do some people watching at the persimmon festival. You going to risk it this year. Already seen quite a few Beverly hillbilly trucks driving around.

I know they were dropping like crazy in Brown County last week. I put up a cam and did some fishing and there were plenty on the ground and as I was fishing I could hear/see them dropping.

Actually my uncle grafted these himself over 30 years ago. He has since passed away. I would loved have to talked him about how he did it and get all the details. Another aunt and uncle of mine bought his place and they pick up 100 qts a day and sell them to resturants and people who go to farmers markets to sell. It doesnt matter to me if they are native or not.
