Being new to deer hunting forums on the internet I have a question/request for members and moderators. Five years ago my daughter married a nice young man who asked me to teach him to deer hunt. Now i'm no teacher as far as bookwork goes but this young man had never even touched a gun in his life. We started off with firearm safety and shooting a slug gun on weekends getting familiar with the weapon and gun safe handling. from there I was lost, of course I told him what to do in the woods, walked him to his stand , strapped him in the first time and explained from now on never hunt elevated without a safety vest and tree strap. After that season I sat at my computer and wrote out a few pages of the basics of deer hunting as I understand them, had my son in law read this and it seemed to explain some things to him I either never covered or quickly mentioned and moved on. My son in law is a high school teacher in a rural county and wanted to talk deer hunting with his students who mostly were far more expierenced than he was.
Now my question/request. Does anyone think there could be a thread dedicated only to a new hunter wanting to learn how to hunt? I know there are men on this site who have forgotten more about hunting than I will ever know, so I'm asking anyone who is interested in this as a topic let me know and I can forward to the moderators what I have on paper, it can then be added to , deleted from etc. I believe this would be a plus for a beginner at any age. Most people who want to hunt have had no one to teach them or explain how to. Awaiting your comments........

Hunter safety course. Does he really want to deer hunt or is he just trying to please someone by going?

Yea, he did the Hunter Safety Course, pleasing someone? Think your missing the point, this is not about my son in law but other guys or gals who have no one to teach or explain how to hunt. I know there's no amount of bookwork or reading that can replace time in the field, but if we can just get the basic's or an explanation to what, who, when, where and how.

Great idea! I taught myself. Wonder how many bad habits I have? None related to safety, I am glad to say.

Most of the hunting around me is small woodlots. Any guy that can accurately shoot a gun can successfully hunt deer if he does 4 things. 1 - get permission (in my experience, the most difficult task). 2 - set a stand on or near the edge of the woods, downwind of the prevailing wind direction. 3 - access the stand from a direction that won't carry your scent through the woodlot. 4 - Sit quietly and wait.
The sad thing is, none of these things requires a guy to learn anything about deer.

You'll get so much from so many unknown sources you'll have a hard time sorting out what is real and what really matters.
If you just sort out biological facts and use them in a logical manner you can learn to be a pretty good hunter and a pretty good hunter can sort out for him self when other people are hunters or just people who talk about hunting.
Facts. 1.Deer sense of smell is WAY WAY WAY better than ours. 2.Deer can't see much better if any better than a normal man with 20/20 but they do see different and you are IN THEIR HABITAT. THEY KNOW what they are looking for. 3.They don't hear much better than a normal human, if you don't include most humans with what has become more or less normal hearing damage most human hunters have suffered.
Just that much right there plus all the gun stuff a newbie has to get down pat is a lot for a new guy to really grasp in the 10 or less times most new guys will go hunting in the first season. I'm talking really learn it, really believe it, and figure out how to really USE IT TO THEIR ADVANTAGE to hunt them.
Most every other specific "tip" is based around those things and how to take advantage of it or how to minimize the deer's advantage.
Oh, I almost forgot. MOST humans can out THINK a deer. That's OUR advantage and it's about our only one. Put it to good use.

Yes Jack I see your point. Hopefully we can keep the information factual.

My tip: you can fool all of the bucks some of the time, some of the bucks all of the time, but never all of the bucks all of the time.
